CIRCAW PEER EDUCATORS

“Empowering You & Educating Students” (E.Y.E.S.)

Audio podcast Script – October 2009

dj: Good morning ECU. I have a special treat for you today. The E.Y.E.S., which stands for “Empowering You & Educating Students”, are in the studio. This is the newest group on campus andeveryone is talking about you E.Y.E.S. Get it? Ha-ha-ha.

dj: So, Jamila, I hear you are an animal lover. Tell me why you wanted to join E.Y.E.S. ‘Cause you have beautiful eyes yourself?

jamila: I joined because I’m a survivor of sexual assault and rape. I believe that educating people on the seriousness of these issues is the start to helping end them. F.Y.I., according to the Violence Policy Center, Oklahoma ranks ninthin the nation for number of women killed by men.

DJ: Okay. Well, moving on to some of our other ladies in the house. Sandra is native from California who came to Oklahoma looking for a cowboy. Well yee-haw! Why did you want to become part of E.Y.E.S.?

sandra: I became a part of E.Y.E.S. to help those without a voice learn how to speak up for themselves, and to be an advocate for them. And, don’t you know that if your boyfriend or girlfriend pushes or shoves you that may be a sign of Dating Violence!

dj: Bekka, someone told me you’re a busy lady. Tell me that’s true. You must be the Mama Cat of the group. ReerrR!

bekka: (Chuckles as though the DJ is a little cuckoo) I am a busy woman with my family and my job. But I wanted to become a Peer Educator for One, I’m a survivor of domestic violence and for Two, I wanted to be able to use my own background, experience, and knowledge to help others in need whether they be female or male! Speaking of domestic violence, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Show your support by wearing the color purple just like the E.Y.E.S. will be.

dj: Nice talking to you girls, but I want to know what is happening with you Ashley. I heard this girl is all over campus. Everybody knows you! You know what I’m saying.

ashley: i am around campus a lot, becauseI am really involved with ECU. I want to make a difference with E.Y.E.S. because I’ve seen abusive behaviors on campus, and I want to take a proactive role against those. In October 1987, when I was 6 months old, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. The movement against domestic abuse is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Violence against Women Act, originally authored by then, Senator Joe Biden.

dj: You ladies are alright, you know? I get that you’re serious about keeping our campus safe. But, I want to know “Sammie Sam” a little more. I heard you’re a pageant winner! Pageant girls love me! I want world peace, too.

sam: Well, you can just call me Sam. I might be Miss Wheelchair Ada, but I joined the E.Y.E.S. because violence is everywhere. We all go through it at some point in our lives. And, it’s important as a student to be involved on campus and want to protect each other and make it a better place for everyone! Whenever you need us, call the CIRCAW office at 559-5892.

dj: I know I’ll be calling if I need you!

sam: well, I’m sure we’ll get a couple calls concerning you! (Laughter from the other E.Y.E.S. in the studio.)

dj: no love today? Moving onto Amy, the comedienne of the group. I love a girl who can make me laugh.

amy: well, I love to laugh as well, but I joined E.Y.E.S. because I have two daughters and I want them and all young women to have healthy, loving relationships. We’re here to help anyone in violent situations. Did you know an average of three women are murdered every day by an intimate partner according to the National Network to End Domestic Violence? But remember, nothing is hopeless. We are here to help, and if you or someone you know needs assistance, stop by the CIRCAW Office, Administration Building, Room 150A.

dj: okay. well, you ladies can stop by anytime to say “Hello”. I will help you spread the word around about keeping our campus safe. Remember, you can call the CIRCAW Office at 559-5892 if you find yourself in an abusive situation. And, that’s all the time we have for you this morning. So, I’ll meet you on the airwaves tomorrow at KECU 98.5 (music plays and fades out).
