Preface
This book records the personal calendar of Darrell M. West, Professor of Political Science at Brown University. My purpose in keeping this log was to shed light on how one individual spent his time around the turn of the century. I was fortunate in my life to meet a wide variety of fascinating people. As a teacher, I was in regular contact with students and colleagues. As an author of several books, I kept in touch with people around the country. As a pollster, public lecturer, and news commentator, I had many dealings with prominent politicians, reporters, and community leaders. The schedule records meetings attended, lunches and dinners which were organized, cultural events enjoyed, and lectures both attended and delivered. Milestones in my life are noted as is my weight each day.
The record starts in 1978 when I was living in Bloomington, Indiana. I had grown up on a small dairy farm in Eaton, Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at Miami University of Ohio. Intent on a career in college teaching, I entered graduate school at Indiana University in 1976. It was a fortuitous turn of events in my life because of the opportunity to meet people and gain valuable new training for myself.
The calendar begins during my third year of graduate work in political science. It notes the courses I took and people I encountered at Indiana. As I started work on my Ph.D. dissertation on the 1980 presidential campaign, I was fortunate to receive a major research grant from the National Science Foundation and an offer of a research fellowship at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. With this financial assistance, I moved to Washington, D.C. in May, 1980 in order to gain a closer perspective on the presidential race.
My search for a teaching position took me to Philadelphia in Summer, 1981 for a one-year job at the University of Pennsylvania while I finished my dissertation and then to Providence, Rhode Island in Summer, 1982 to start a full-time faculty teaching position at Brown University. It was at Brown where I met my wife Annie Schmitt, a Brown Professor of Biology, and married her August 6, 1983. While teaching at Brown, I wrote several books about politics, received tenure in 1988, and was promoted to Full Professor in 1994. My hope is that this book is instructive about my life during this period of time.
