Elang 273

For this homework assignment, do whichever part you didn’t do for Friday’s homework:

Part 1: Interview 3 people and ask them to respond to the short survey below. Attached to this assignment is a copy of a map of the United Statesgiven the first day of class—you can either photocopy it and have each person draw lines, or use the same map and have them point to the dialect areas.

Part 1. Ask the following questions and provide the respondents’ answers:

1.  Where are there dialects in the United States?

2.  Are there places in the U.S where people speak with an accent? Where are they?

3.  Are there places in the U.S. where the people seem to be (in general) nicer, more friendly? Where are they?

4.  Are there places in the U.S. where people seem to be (in general) less friendly, more difficult to get to know? Where are they?

5.  Is the place where you live a place where people don’t speak with an accent, speak with an accent that is seen as not formal or standard, or speak with an accent, but it’s neither good nor bad?

Did you see a similar pattern that we saw in class studies—i.e., that places where people perceive that standard English is spoken are seen as unfriendly places, but places where people perceive English is non-standard are seen as friendly places? Explain.

Part 2: Choose a text (either a short story, a TV show, or a movie) and examine the differences between male and female interaction. How is power and solidarity manifested in the language? Describe how males and females differ in their use of at least two of the following: (a) different speech acts, (b) politeness, (c) hedges, (d) directness. Write a 1-2 paragraph analysis of what you examine. Be sure to use very specific examples (NOT things like “Rachel talks really female but Phoebe doesn’t”). Provide a printout of the TV show, movie, or short story) (Be sure to just discuss one short scene/one conversation.)
