THE GRAPEVINE HOPE CENTRE

GHC –SCHOOL

A SECTION OF THE GHC SCHOOL.

BRIEF BACKGROUND

Grapevine Hope Centre School is a community based school in Nairobi County, Kenya. It is located in the Sewage/Matopeni slums of Njiru Sub County of Nairobi County. It is run by a community-youth based organization.

The school provides Lowcost-High quality education to the poor children/vulnerable children of Matopeni slums and its environs done on a cost-sharing basis.

Grapevine Hope Centre (GHC), the organization behind this project engages in various income generating activities to raise funds to pay staff and support other school operations. We have engaged in Fish farming, Greenhouse/vegetable farming among others.

At the moment the school has a population of 200 pupils 104 Boys and 96 Girls. They are from pre-school to standard seven, a total of 10 classrooms.

Due to the little fees levied and luck of enough funds in general, it has been very difficult to build good/ descent classrooms. We operate from shags-Iron sheet classrooms with earthen floor and no doors. The sheets are old and they leak. During the rain seasons (like now) the roofs leak and the classroom become muddy, slippery, cold and chilly predisposing children to poor health.

During the dry season, it is very dusty. This also predisposes children to Jigger infection and other related problems. We use 3 toilets in the neighborhood for all our staff and children.

The loose, old iron sheets sometimes cause injuries to the children as they play.

Due to the above reason, most children stay at home and miss a lot. Other very good descent schools are expensive. It should be noted that our understanding of the problems they face, affordability and school feeling program has kept them in school not to transfer to other schools.

The Nature of our Classrooms

To give these children hope, we need to have a better/conducive learning environment that is also attractive and appealing. To enable these children / unleash their potential, there is urgent need to provide a conclusive environment for learning and improve their self esteem by making them comfortable

Economic situation

In Matopeni where the project is based, the living standards and resources such as power supplies are harshly inadequate, there are few services and unemployment is extremely high with resident’s main occupation being mundane casual labourers (e.g. collecting left foodstuffs, washing).

The village is located along a sewer line, a place previously occupied by sewerage dams. Matopeni is derived from a Swahili word which means Muddy conditions (probably after the relocation of the sewage dam, the place was very muddy).

The majority of residents are unemployed or under-employed as casual (unskilled) labourers in the nearby Quarry, which provides low wages. The area is known for illegal alcohol manufacture and sale, and for the sex work industry in which many local women and girls are employed. .

Some engage in petty trade in fruits, vegetables and hawking cooked foodstuff in which they earn less than a dollar a day.
Most “regularly employed” residents, mostly female worker, are employed as domestic workers in the neighboring bigger Kayole and Komarock estates. Their payments are very poor & often delayed.

Health situation in the region

Like most other slums in Kenya, Matopeni village (slum) is characterized by poor sanitation, lack decent housing, and unregulated and illegal activities. The government has s not been recognizing this area as a part of Nairobi City and therefore did not feel obligated to provide welfare services and other social amenities. The village receives water three times a week from the Nairobi City Council Water Supply Unity.
The settlement is characterized by poor toilets/latrines.

Residents use a few communal toilets set along the sewage line. Most of communal toilets are in very poor condition: while some have no doors, they are also dirty and face the front of the road. Women feel embarrassed to go to these toilets and so are forced to use the school toilets, which are not sufficient to serve them all. Much of the accommodation is sub-standard one roomed galvanized iron sheet dwellings with little or no privacy. The poor conditions and lack of services result in general despair expressed amongst the residents.

Diseases such as Malaria, Cholera, Diarrhoea and Dysentery are very common. Sick and injured residents must travel to the nearest Kayole City Council hospital, which is 5km away, for treatment. However, the hospital does not have adequate facilities for the prevention and control of disease outbreaks that regularly occur, which is a factor in the high death rate recorded from these diseases in the community. We hope to put a smile to all this vulnerable children and give them hope.

PROBLEMS STATEMENT

-Our children especially Pre-school play about with iron sheets and sometimes they are cut.

-Earth floor attracts jiggers and fleas due to lack of water

-Dust is another problem

-To save these young innocent children, we need to build permanent rooms.

-Due to the nature of structures we have, text books and office materials are not safe and so we need permanent structures to ensure safety to the school properties.

-Water storage is also a big issue since water is not frequently in place and so we lack storage (Tank) which can save the dusty situation around the classroom, drinking and washing toilets and cooking.

-WeThey take long time queuing to use the only 2toilets available.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

a)Construction of 6 classrooms for pre-school – These are the most vulnerable group

b)Construction of 5toilets plus a urinal

c)Construction of school office – To ensure the safety and security to officials documents and other properties.

d)Purchase of water tank / water storage – To ensure availability of water for general use in school we expect this project to take place within a period of 6Months subject to availability of funds.
