Sample of a Good Application

Please describe the proposed events and/or activities for which you are applying for funding. Please provide as much details about the events and activities as possible.
To allow the girls to find out what living in the Shetland Islands involves we have planned:
·  a bus tour of the islands to see the wildlife and the timescales in travelling between islands
·  a visit to Jarlshof to see some of the Viking history
·  time spent with Guides from the islands to compare activities, what they do at their meetings and what life is like on the Shetland Islands
·  a walking tour of Lerwick to find out more about the main town
·  a visit to the Shetland Museum and Archives
We will travel overnight on the ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland – none of the girls and only one of the Leaders have been on this ferry - and most of the girls have never even been on any sort of ferry.
We will be staying in the Youth Hostel and part of the girls’ experience will be planning meals, buying stores and preparing their own food.
Our funding application is to cover the ferry costs which are significant as it would not be appropriate to book only airline seats for an overnight journey with up to 600 passengers on board.
Girls and Leaders will be in 4 berth cabins (3 with 4 occupants and 3 with 3 occupants) and the cost of cabins is £1018.80
The ferry cost is £1822.20 – see attached invoice.
Girls’ payments will cover accommodation, most of the food for the weekend and a small proportion of the travel costs but after the hectic and costly Centenary year we will be subsidising this trip from unit funds (gift aid).
On what date will you expect your project to start? / September 2014 / When will you expect your project to finish? / May 2015
Please give the postcode of the regular meeting place of your group:
(You must complete this) / AB51 4RY

What impact will this funding have?
(e.g. on young people, on the volunteers within your group, on the local community)
Each year we have taken guides to camps and holidays in our local area and we also gave them a ‘bigger’ experience when 19 of us went to London in 2009.
After London we wanted to give them the opportunity to see the opposite end of the country and have a totally different experience – several of the girls going to Shetland were also on the London trip.
Only one of the Leaders has been to Shetland before, and none of the girls in the group have been to Shetland so this would be a totally different experience from their usual life in a busy market town.
We hope that the experience will help them to appreciate how other people live and the impact location can have on the activities available and the different opportunities for girls of their age.
How have you identified the need for this project?
Five of the girls went to Mull, in April 2010, for a Scottish Centenary adventure and came back with such enthusiasm for the ferry and its facilities, and the experience they had had living on an island that the other Guides asked if we could take them on a trip to an island.
Did you consult young people, and if so, what did they say?
When asking for programme ideas before the holidays in June 2010, the girls suggested the trip to an island – we proposed Shetland as there is a ferry link from Aberdeen and they were very enthusiastic about this as most have never been on any sort of ferry and none of them have been on the Northlink ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick.
How will you record what you have achieved: (You will be required to keep records on the number of participants and the events and activities that have been organised as a result of this funding)
Girls and Leaders will each keep a logbook of the event and will take photographs which will be shared with others in the unit and their parents. It is also likely that girls will be asked to speak about their trip at Friends of Guiding, District and County meetings.
In addition accounts of the event will be prepared.
