DAVID ANTHONY MOORE: brief CV.
Born Wimbledon, London, 26.10.1939.
Educated at King's School Worcester (scholarship) 1952 - 1956, whence six GCE "O" levels (English Language, English Lit., French, Maths, Physics, Chemistry).
Places of work: Thomas Cook (travel agents then as now) London (City), 1956 to 1957
Monsanto Chemicals, London (Victoria), cost accounting, 1957 to 1961
British Railways, in various locations and posts from 1961, including (1972 to 1976)
that of Area Sales Manager Northern Germany, located Hamburg, then
posts in European Sales and Marketing until 1989 (redundant).
There followed a period in which I operated (not very successfully) my own launderette, up to 1995, and a number of filling-in jobs with employment agencies, including some six months on German building sites as a labourer-cum-interpreter.

At that time, and at that age, without formal language qualifications, I was unable to get any sort of sensible job in the UK; you may know how it is: "Aha, so you speak German - just what we need. What certificates do you have?" Oh, I see; yes..... well, we'll let you know....". And that of course is all you do hear.
I moved to Germany in the late 1990s, when I started free-lance translating, building on experience with BR. Having been nominated for the BR International panel of translators for French and German work after being promoted from Germany back to England in 1976, I certainly translated many hundreds of pages of railway-related documents from German (and French, though my French is no longer up to scratch) into English. In addition, my work brought me to the continent several times a year, enabling me to maintain touch with the languages. I translate ONLY from German into English, but proofread in both languages in suitable cases.

In 1999, I met my wife, who is German and has graduated (by government examination and certification) as a Foreign Languages Correspondent (English, French) and Translator, and we married in 2002 (in England). She also gives extra tuition in English and French; and she's very good at it too, although she never wanted to teach!

My main special fields include railways and model railways (in which I have a virtually life-long interest), travel, transport, modelling (not the catwalk sort!), the building and automotive industries and general technology (e.g. user's manuals etc.), environmental engineering and nature - flora, fauna etc. I also translate legal documents such as AGBs / General Terms and Conditions. In recent years, I have translated for a number of railway and travel magazines for both the USA and the European markets.

I am never afraid to decline a job when I feel uncomfortable with the subject of the text or its quality, and I am happy to undertake small test translations on request.

Just like the customer, I set the greatest store by delivering a good translation on time.
