Communications Assistant

(Summer Student Position: 30 hrs/week)

The Peel HIV/AIDS Network (PHAN) is committed to serving people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and to limit the spread of the virus through support, education, advocacy and volunteerism.

The Position

Reporting to the Community Engagement Coordinator, the Communications Assistant will assist the Agency in the creation and implementation of communication strategies and materials along with methods for internal and external use.


Key Responsibilities:

·  Compile and recommend improvements for the Agency monthly e-Newsletter and semi-annual Newsletter

·  Review and update Agency communication lists

·  Update, recommend and implement improvements for the Agency Website

·  Increase the Agency’s visibility and engagement on Social Marketing Outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

·  Assist in the creation of media releases, advisories and other communication materials

·  Assist in the creation and implementation of strategies and benchmarks for efficient internal communications

·  Assist in the compilation of the Agency Annual Report

·  Assist in the creation of promotional and outreach materials, as necessary

Qualification and Skills:

·  Post-secondary education preferably related to Marketing, Communications or similar

·  Demonstrated knowledge of HIV/AIDS

·  Strong understanding and demonstrated experience of applying Anti-Racism Anti-Oppression Principles

·  Solid knowledge of the local community (Peel Region)

·  Experience in writing and editing for print and online for different audiences including media, government officials and community partners

·  Experience in designing and compiling e-Newsletters

·  Ability to work independently and within a team

·  Excellent written and oral communications skills

·  Good time management and organizational skills

·  Proficiency in MS Office Applications

·  Strong understanding of Social Marketing Tools (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs etc.)

·  Working knowledge of CSS, HTML is not necessary but an asset

These positions are funded by Canada Summer Jobs and requires that applicants must,

·  be between 15 and 30 years of age;

·  have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

·  be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible);

·  be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Salary: $12.25 per hr

Commitment: 30 hours/week for 11 weeks starting June 11th or 18th
