Thisprojectwillconsistofbuildingacuttingboard. Tomakethisproject,inaddition tothetoolsyouarealreadyfamiliarwith,youwillneedtolearnhowtosafelyusethe radialarmsaw,mitersaw,andtheplaner. Allofthesetoolshavethepotentialtobe extremelydangerous,andsoitisextremelyimportantthatyoupayverycloseattention tothesafetydemonstrationsgivenforthesetools,andthatyoualwaysfollowallofthe rules forusingthesetools verycarefully.

Youwillalsolearnsomeinterestingwoodworkingtechniquesasyoubuildthisproject, whichyouwillbeabletoapplytoyourfutureprojects.

Notwocuttingboardswilllookalike,sothisprojecthasagreatdealofopportunityfor youtoexpress yourcreativity!

DetailedStepstoConstructingaCutting Board

1. Drawsomesmallsketchesofwhatyouwouldlikeyourcuttingboardtolooklike. Shownbelowaresomepossibleexamples.

Thereisagreatdealofopportunitywiththisprojecttocreateaverycreativedesign, butafteryoudrawyourpictures, youmustshowthemtoMr.Culhambeforeproceeding sowecanbothdecideifthedesignsthatyouhavedrawncanactuallybebuilt! You willthenchoosetheoneyouwanttomake.

2. Drawafullsizepictureofyourcuttingboard. Yourcuttingboardshouldbeabout

12"longand10" wide,plus anyhandlethatitmayhave.

3. Cutoutrectangles ofpaper-oneforeachpieceofwoodyouwillneed. Youdothis inorderto determinethesizeofeachpieceofwoodrequiredtobuildyourcutting board. Eachrectangularpiecemustbelargeenoughsothatitcompletelyoverlapsthe jointbetweenitandthepiecenexttoit. Seeexamplebelow.

4.Completelyfilloutaplansheet,includinglistofmaterialsandtotalcostofmaterials. Everycutting boardisunique,andsoeverylistofmaterialswillbedifferent. You mustuseyourpaperpatternpiecestomakeyourmaterialslistanddeterminethetotal cost. SeetheHowtoCalculateCostofWoodinstructionsheetfordetails onhowtodo this.

Afteryouhavecompletedyourplansheet,youmusthaveitsignedbyMr.Culhamin ordertoproceed.

5. Youmustnowfindyourpiecesofwoodandcutthemtolength. Foracutting board,youshouldusehardwoodssuchasmaple,walnut,cherry,hickory,oranyother woodwhichisveryhardandhasatightgrainpattern. Woodssuchaspineorcedarare notacceptableforuseinacuttingboard.

Whenlookingforwood,followthesesteps:

-First,lookintheburnboxestoseeifanyoneputanypiecesofwoodtherethat youcanuseforyourcuttingboard.

-Nextlookinthewhitewoodstoragecabinettofindpiecesthatwillwork. Pleaseputany piecesyoudonotusebackintheexactlocationyoutook themfrom!

-Ifyoucan’tfindthepiecesyouneedintheselocations,youwillneedtoget

Mr.Culham’s permissiontogointothewood roomandselectyourwood.

-Ifyoucan’tfindanypieceslargeenough,youmayhavetogluetwopiecesof woodtogetherinordertocreatealargerboard.

Onceyouhaveselectedyourboards,cutthemtothecorrectlengths. Cutlongerboards downtosizeusingtheradialarmsaw. Cutshorterboards tosizeusingthemitersaw. YoumustshowyourwoodtoMr.Culhamandgethis permissionbeforecuttingany ofyourwood.

6.Gluepiecesofwoodtogether,overlappingwithnewspaperbetweenthem.Make suretheyoverlapthecorrectamount. Hereisapictureofhowa3piececuttingboard wouldbegluedtogether:

Pleasefollowthesesteps:

-Bringyourfullsizepicture,yourpiecesofwood,andasheetofnewspaper overtothegluetable.

-Placeyourfullsizepicturedownonthetablefirst.

-Layoutyourpieces ofwoodas youbelievetheyshouldbeassembled.

-HaveMr.Culhamcheckyourlayout.

-Onceweareallcertainthateverythingiscorrect,gluethemtogetherwiththe newspaperbetweenthem. Theremustbeglueonboth sides ofthenewspaper.

-ClampthemtogetherusingC-clamps.Youwilluse 2ateach joint, soa3piececuttingboardwillrequire4clamps,a4piece cuttingboard willrequire6clamps,anda5piececuttingboard willrequire 8 clamps. Have yourclamps ready before you begintoglue.

-Make sure your name and period is clearly written on your project!

7. Afteryourglueisdry(thenextclass),drawthelineswhereyouwanttocutthe wavylinesonthebandsaw. Theselinesmustnotgooffoftheedgesofeitherboard youwillbecuttingthrough. CheckwithMr.Culhambeforemaking thesecuts.

8. Cutthewavylinesonthebandsaw. Stayonyourlinesasyoumakethesecuts. If youwanderoff ofyourlines,youmustnotbackupinthecutyouaremaking. Instead,justworkyourwaybacktoyourline,andcontinue.

9. Afteryouhavefinishedyourbandsawcuts,separateyourpiecesofwoodusinga hammeranda stiffputtyknife. Theyshouldactuallycomeapartfairlyeasily,asthe newspaperwillactuallysplit. Makesurethepieces fittogetheras youintended.

10. Glueyourpiecestogetherwithapieceofveneerbetweeneachofthepieces. The veneerisimportant,asitwillhelpthepiecesfittogethermuchbetter. Makesuretoput glueonboth sides oftheveneer.

Whenclampingthesepieces together, thelarge,

barclamps on the clamp rack workbest.

11. Afteryourglueisdry(thenextclass),removealltheglueandasmuchpaperas possibleoffofyourcuttingboard. Usescrapers,chisels,andaportablebeltsanderas needed. Get Mr. Culham to go over the safety issues with this tool before using it.

Whenbeltsanding,itisnotnecessarytomakeyourboardcompletelyflat. Youonly needtoremove excessglueandpapersothatwedon’truintheplanerbladeswhen doingthenextstep.

12. UsingthePlaner,planeyourcuttingboardtoitsfinalthickness. Donottakeoff morethanisneeded,asyourcuttingboardmayenduptoothin. Get Mr. Culham to go over the safety issues with this tool before using it.

13.Cutyourcuttingboardtoitsfinal shapeusingtheappropriatetools. Thisisusually donewiththe bandsawandifthereareanyholesinit,thedrillpress. Beforeyou makethesecuts,drawlines whereyouintendtocutyourboardandshowMr. Culham.

14. Sanduntilperfectlysmooth,sothatnosawmarksorsandingmarksarevisible. Beginbysandingtheedgesonthebeltdiscsandingmachine. Thensandtheentire boardwithapalmsanderatthe sandingtable. Finally,handsandtheentireproject. Always sandprojects upto220gritsandpaper.

15. Finishyourcuttingboardwithanoilfinish. YoumustusethefinishMr.Culhaminstructsyoutouse. Youmustneveruseanyfinishwhichwouldbepoisonous,asfood willbeindirectcontactwithyourcuttingboard.
