‘How To’ Facebook
The Cheshire Federation of WIs started their Facebook on WI day 2016 to celebrate the centenary and it has attracted many followers. Cheshire WI members, other federations and organisations all over the world.
But do you know what Facebook is?
It is a social networking site where you can send messages to people, share images and ideas and create a network of friends or colleagues, depending on the purpose you set it up for. Many people use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family - to inform them of where they are in the world or share the latest baby photos with family abroad.
Companies use Facebook to advertise their services or solutions and find new business as a result of this type of business networking. They also will look to Facebook to find suitable employees.
The CFWI and WI facebook pages are usually ‘group’ pages so act rather like a business. More than one person can be the editor of a group page. A personal account has slight differences – only you have access to set up the preferences and protection levels.
So how do you get started?
Step 1: Go to the Facebook welcome page at
On this welcome page you will see the "Sign Up" section. Just fill in your name, email, birthday and gender. Your birthday does not have to be your real one unless you are happy to share this information. A WI could use their year of formation – but the year has to be over 16 years of age as children cannot set up social media pages.
Click the "Sign Up" button, and then enter the CAPTCHA code you see on their security page.
You will then be sent a confirmation e-mail. Access your email account, click on the link in the email from Facebook and you will be taken to the "Getting Started" page.
Step 2: Facebook will now ask if you want your email account or instant message friend list scanned for already registered friends. You can skip this step. It is better to skip this – whenever this message comes up on any website click skip or no – you do not want to give anyone access to your contacts. ‘Think Safe’
Step 3: In the next step you can enter your High School, College or other Learning Institutions, as well as your place of employment. You can skip this step. If you enter this information, Facebook will take you to a page displaying Facebook individuals that have similar information. You are given the option of selecting them as "friend".’ ‘Think Safe’
Step 4: Now it is time to set up your profile photo. You click on ‘Upload a photo’ and browse to the find the image on your computer. Click on Save and Continue.
Step 5: Now check out the Privacy Settings in your Facebook. Click on “Settings” at the top corner of the page. Then click on “Privacy settings . To change your privacy settings on contact information, click on “contact information.” You can choose if you want your friends to view your screen name, mobile phone number, land line phone number, your address, websites, etc. All drop down boxes give you the options to share with Friends only, their friends or everyone. If you choose none then no-one will be able to find you.
