Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the area of kitchen design and planning.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of space planning and the impact on a kitchen design, and apply space planning requirements to a kitchen design and seek client approval.

3Definitions

Worksite requirements–refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

Client – refers to the person who has commissioned the design brief.

Design brief – refers to the design parameters agreed between the kitchen or bathroom designer and the client.

4Evidence is required of a completed kitchen design.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of space planning and itsimpact on a kitchen design.

Evidence requirements

1.1The food flow sequence is identified and described in terms of itsimpact on a kitchen design.

1.2The work triangle(s) is identified and described in terms of itsimpact on a kitchen design.

1.3Advantages and disadvantages of different types of kitchen layouts are identified and compared in terms of their impact on a kitchen design.

Rangekitchen layouts include but are not limited to – one wall kitchen, corridor (galley) or two wall kitchen, L-shaped kitchen or L-shaped with island, U-shaped kitchen, one wall with island.

1.4Main appliance, landing spaces, storage requirements, and access are identified and described for the food storage and preparation centre, the sink and clean up centre, and the cooking and serving centre, in accordance with the references.

Outcome 2

Apply space planning requirements to a kitchen design and seek client approval.

Evidence requirements

2.1Space planning requirements are incorporated into the kitchen design in accordance with worksite requirements and the design brief.

Rangespace planning requirements include but are not limited to – food flow sequence; work triangle; main appliance, landing spaces and storage requirements; storage systems; vertical heights for major kitchen components; access.

2.2Client approval for space planning requirements is sought in accordance with worksite requirements.
