EASTLEIGH WORKS, BR MAINTENANCE LTD.

I began working on the railways at the age of sixteen when I took apprenticeship in electrics at BR Maintenance Ltd., Eastleigh. I remained at the site, throughout privatisation, until 2004, progressing through the ranks of inspector and foreman to chief foreman.

ALSTOM TRANSPORT SERVICES, EASTLEIGH

In 1999, after Alstom bought Eastleigh works, I became area manager at the site. In this role I was responsible for over two hundred staff across the areas of vehicle refurbishment, vehicle painting, component manufacture and refinement.

Other responsibilities included developing performance targets within quality standards, safety policies and budgeted plans. I was also tasked with encouraging continual improvements in maintaining high-quality workmanship within an environment mutually beneficial for the company and employees. This included negotiating with trade unions when implementing changes as well as liaising with clients to ensure conformance with their requirements.

During this time, I held weekly strategy meetings with the plant director so as to maintain and improve performance of the site. I also held monthly safety meetings to ensure that actions were closed out.

SOUTHERN RAILWAY, SELHURST

Southern employed me from February 2004 to May 2004 as project manager on their building a bogie facility at Selhurst depot. I developed a strategy and project plan from embryo through implementation.

During this project I was responsible for constructing an engineering-change document detailing the management of the project and relationships between the stakeholders. I developed and maintained a risk register for the project and managed the building of the “BOM” at the facility. This included sourcing parts from suppliers, maintaining a budget for the implementation and operation of the facility and developing plant requirements and sourcing the plant from suppliers.

In addition to this I developed and implemented training, constructed employee requirements and skills and developed COSHH, risk assessments and local health and safety documents for the process.

ALSTOM, EASTLEIGH

I worked as production manager for Alstom’s 455 refurbishment at Eastleigh depot between May and October 2004. The main responsibilities for this role were to manage resources and facilities while developing and maintaining a project plan in order to deliver vehicles back to the customers within project requirements.

During this task I designed a detailed production-build line and produced financial data to prove its viability before then implementing it with fixed production stages. This increased unit delivery from on unit per month to three units per month.

I also developed training competency matrices for all staff on the project and instigated training assessment processes to ensure the quality of the finished product was maintained.

PORTERBROOK LEASING

From January to April 2005, I worked as programme manager on the Southern Railway 319 SRA modification at Selhurst depot, co-ordinating the sub-contract team. This work involved extensive door-overhauls, electronic-component upgrades, AWS upgrades and other vehicle modifications.

My main responsibilities for this job were to ensure that relevant procedures and standards were adhered to so that the TOC’s operational requirements could be met. It was also important to make sure that all the work carried out complied with Southern’s maintenance plan for the units and that the staff employed were competent to carry out this work; this was done through reviews of training evidence and workplace assessments. An additional part of the job was to arrange unit availability with the depot team both pre- and post-modification so that disruption be kept to a minimum.

Another part of this job was to develop, organise and maintain the material delivery and stock-holding at Selhurst; this included maintaining the modification store and stock in accordance with the depot standards as set by Southern. I was also tasked with carrying out daily inspections of all completed work as well as ensuring that sign-off sheets be kept so as to meet quality standards and keep modification statuses of the trains up to date.

I was also responsible for holding weekly tri-party meetings between Selhurst, Porterbrook and sub-contractors, as well as attending daily production meetings at the depot. This ensured that project targets were being met, misunderstandings were being closed and that concerns, issues and project deliverables were being communicated to the depot.

ALSTOM, SELHURST

Between May 2005 and March 2006, I was employed as the 455 product-delivery manager for Alstom. This role saw me responsible for the financial, safety, productivity and output performance for the 455-refurbishment project, with responsibility for the effective operation and actions of 250 staff. Whilst liaising daily with the customer on the delivery schedule and related issues. Reporting to the project manager and the plant director, I ensured that unit deliveries were maintained within an environment during factory closure whilst also liaising daily with the customer on the delivery schedule and related issues.

This involved understanding and adhering to the safety strategy published by the operating TOC, maintaining production targets within a challenging environment, maintaining quality standards and meeting health and safety regulations. In addition, I was tasked with development of a back-up plan and its implementation, in the event that delivery should have fallen behind.

I also lead a team in the development of a satellite store for this project and authorised procedures for its operation. Other responsibilities included negotiating with trade unions with regard to any changes that occurred that could have affected morale.

ALSTOM Transport:

Since April 2006, I have been employed by ALTOM Transport to draft, construct and authorise technical and financial documentation and to ensure this is cascaded to the relevant parties and that understanding is achieved.
