Clothing Care Basics
Chapter 14
Why Care for Clothes?
Keeping clothes in order can save time and money
Organized, clean, in good repair
Last longer, if stains are dealt with quickly, can avoid dry-cleaning bills
Stains
Laundering with hot water without treating stains
Can set the stain and make it almost impossible to remove
Four basic stain removal methods
Rinse in cold water
Soak for 30 minutes
Pre-treating – liquid detergent or paste on stain before laundering
Bleaching – diluted, only for whites
Pre-treatment options
An enzyme pre-soak can get out
- Chocolate, blood, egg, meat juice, milk, perspiration, grass, or other protein stains
- Don’t use with wool or silk! (protein-based fibers)
A prewash soil and stain remover (such as spray and wash) can get out
- Oily, greasy or heavily soiled stains
Ironing vs. Pressing
Pressing is a light touch-up of a garment, lifting and lowering the iron lightly from one area to the next
Ironing the whole garment is more time consuming and involved
Putting Clothes Away
Avoid wrinkles, ironing and looking for lost clothes
Woven garments on hangers
Empty pockets, close zipper or top button, use wide hanger for jackets or items likely to crease
Knitted garments should be stored on a shelf or in a drawer
Fabric Care Labels
Garments must include a care label
Regulated by Industry Canada
Not required on socks and hosiery

Care codes were standardized in 1997 due to globalization of fashion production
