LIGHTING THE ADVENT CANDLES:

Today is the third Sunday in Advent. Last week, we lit the first two candles in our Advent wreath, the candles that represent Hope and Peace. (The first two candles are lit.) Today we light the third candle, the candle that represents joy. We live in a world longing for joy: a joy that releases silence, that erupts into laughter and singing, a joy that dreams beyond all constraints.

Knowing the need for joy in our own lives and in this troubled world, we light this candle as a symbol of the joy promised in the coming of Jesus. (The third candle is lit.)

♪SUNG RESPONSE: (VU 7)

telling the world that the Saviour is born.

Our Advent Projects this year are:

  • SLEEPING CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD (SCAW) was started by Murray Dryden, the father of the hockey Drydens, in an attempt to help children in third world countries get a decent sleep at night Each bed kit contains a mattress, blankets, ground sheet, clothing and personal items. The estate of Murray Dryden covers all administrative expenses so 100% of your gift gets to thechildren. This has been one of our projects each yearover the last 20 years. In 2013 our donations purchased 41 bedkits which we distributed in the Philippines.
  • PACKSAC SMILES is a local initiative started in August 2005 by Darlene Tripp and our own Sandra Rozicki. Packsacs full of clothing, school supplies and personal items are given to needy children in Aug so that they too can start school in September as well prepared as their classmates. In 2005, 13 packsacs were delivered. In 2012 they delivered 217 at an average cost of $130 each. In 2013 our donations provided 15 packsacks. Again, because all the work is done by volunteers, all of your donation goes to the work of the project.
  • We use PILL BOTTLE BANKS to collect for Advent. We suggest you place it on your meal table and each day put a coin in it at grace time. Explain to your

children what it is for. Before the end of the year bring in your offerings. If your pill bottle is too small, dump out

the coin replace it with the value in larger currency and use the other coins again. Cheques and folding money also fit nicely in the banks. Be sure to take one home today.
