Transition Arrangements

This qualification and the National Certificate in Wood Manufacturing Foundation Skills (Wood Handling and Distribution) (Level 2) [Ref:1692] have been reviewed and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Wood Manufacturing (Level 2) with strands in Foundation Knowledge, Wood Handling and Distribution, and Wood Processing [Ref:2309].

People currently working towards this expiring qualification may either complete the requirements for the qualification by 31 December 2018 or transfer their results to the replacementNew Zealand qualification.

New enrolments into programmes leading to this expiring qualification will not be accepted after31 December 2015.

It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the address below. Appeals will be considered on a case by case basis.

Purpose

This qualification recognises the attainment of health, safety, environmental, compliance, and entry level operations skills and knowledge required by temporary workers in the wood manufacturing industries.

This qualification is designed to be flexible and allows temporary workers engaged in a range of occupations and functional areas within the wood manufacturing industries to select the outcomes most appropriate for their job role. Elective 1 addresses health, safety, and measurement skills required across the wood manufacturing industries. Elective 2 allows for the development of skills to meet regulatory requirements in the operation of equipment, and health and safety systems. The candidates can then choose more standards from the electives which are specific to their work requirements to meet the overall total of 44 credits.

People who gain permanent employment in any of these industries and have completed the National Certificate in Wood Manufacturing - Generic Skills (Workplace Safety and Operations) (Level 2) [Ref: 1304], can continue on a career pathway to the National Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing (Level 2) with strands in Defecting; Finger Jointing and Laminating; Pole, Post and Pile; Saw Doctoring Principles; Sawmilling; Timber Drying and Treatment; and Timber Machining [Ref: 1690], which is the entry level pathway qualification for employees in the wood manufacturing industries.

Requirements for Award of Qualification

Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website:
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Transition Arrangements

Version 3

Version 3 of this qualification was issued following revision to combine Electives 2 and 3 into one elective section, include the Wood Manufacturing Foundation Skills domain in Elective 2 qualification and to update details of reviewed standards.

Changes to structure and content

Titles, levels, and credits of standards were updated to reflect changes made when they were reviewed.

Expiring Core Health standards 6400-6402 were replaced by new First Aid standards 26551 and 26552.

Expiring standard 9774 was replaced by standard 27074.

Expiring standard 16606 was removed.

The Elective 1 rule was amended to a minimum of 8 credits.

Elective 3 was added to Elective 2 to create a single elective section.

The Elective 2 rule was amended to a minimum of 35 credits.

The Wood Manufacturing Foundation Skills domain was added to Elective 2.

People working towards version 2 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to version 3. The last date for entry to training programmes or courses for version 2 is September 2011.

People working towards version 1 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to version 3. The last date for entry to training programmes or courses for version 1 is September 2011.

This qualification contains standards that replace or substitute earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification people who have gained credit for the earlier standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement or substitute standards – see table below.

While the exemption from standard 24089 for standard 15164 is valid for the purposes of completing this qualification, it should be noted that if a candidate does not already hold a Class 2 or 5 driver licence, they will need to complete standard 24089 in order to satisfy current NZ Transport Agency requirements for those licenses.

This qualification contains classifications that replace earlier classifications. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for standards in the expired classifications may continue to use those credits to meet the qualification requirements.

Previous version of the qualification

Version 2 was issued following review to update the credit values of reviewed standards, to add a standard to Elective 2, and to update domains as a result of the review of Forestry standards. Changes to structure and content included: standard 20645 was added to Elective 2 and standard 15164 was substituted by standard 24089.

Version 1 was developed as part of the review of the Solid Wood Processing qualifications in 2007.
