img src=http://www.nwlink.com/~holben/advertelgin.jpg> My favorite among favorite U.S. watch firms is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Chicago in Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago. By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (think of that in today’s prices!) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, which (ironically) was instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier of Waltham fame.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following men’s timepiece from the Elgin firm, a 14kt Solid Yellow Goldmodel that dates to 1943 in excellent condition. This is a Lord Elgin timepiece, the company’s top of the line, and it features a high-grade 21 jewel mechanism made right here in the United States. When new it retailed for $100…about $1,100 in today’s dollars.
Triple-signed for Elgin, it measures 33.5mm end to end and 24mm in width (26mm with winding crown), or 1-5/8 inches long by 1 inch in width – a smaller size suited for either a woman or a man who prefers a smaller timepiece. My trusted watchmaker David has fully serviced its original 559 grade mechanism to ensure it runs smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The black, matte enamel finished metal dial is in excellent condition, professionally restored to its correct status. Features include raised gold numerals and hour markers, 60 minute outer track border, original gold metal Fuseaux-style hands (unique to Elgin) and a recessed, square seconds dial with ‘sweep’ gold seconds hand. Signed LORD ELGIN below the 12 with “Star” below this.
The curved (from left to right) solid glass crystal is new old stock and in mint condition, especially designed for this watch. The two-piece case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and nicely curved at the sides. It is in excellent PLUS shape. The original winding crown is gold finished, (correctly) unsigned and in great condition, operating smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent order, stamped 14K GOLD at one end. Peeking inside I find a high-grade Twenty One Jewel (15/0 Size) manual wind movement signed Elgin [Grade] 559 – USA, 21 Jewels with serial number Y238,715, dating this watch to ca 1943 as per company production records. The inside of the case back is stamped Cased and Timed by Elgin National Watch Co. – Wadsworth - 14K GOLD, with case reference number below.
This watch has been fully overhauled to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a new 18mm deBeer Paris black lizard (grain) calf leather strap with gold finished buckle. All in all an excellent, ready to wear American solid gold Tank watch – my photos don’t quite do it justice. p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. img src=http://www.nwlink.com/~holben/advertgirardperregaux.jpg>The history of the Girard-Perregaux Watch Company begins in 1791, when the watchmakers Bautte and Mouline founded a factory in Geneva to manufacture watches. In 1856 the watchmaker constant Girard married Marie Perregaux and the unified firm of “Girard – Perregaux” came into being.
In 1906 Perregaux acquired the earlier firm of Bautte and Mouline, and today the firm is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds. They have always made a name for themselves in the realm of wristwatches through their unique creativity and high quality mechanisms, one of a select few who produce many of its movements entirely in-house. Today, Girard Perregaux watches are among the most expensive timepieces you can buy, making the vintage models a sound investment.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage timepiece from Girard Perregaux, a ladies 14kt Solid Yellow Gold & Enameled vintage dress model that dates to the mid 1950s and is in great, original condition. This is what’s described as an “evening” or “cocktail” watch and it is quadruple-signed for Girard-Perregaux…on the dial, winding crown, case and mechanism. Did you note the cobalt blue inlaid enameling on the fancy lugs? Quite striking and rather unique.
Its case measures 29mm lug tip to lug tip and 13mm in width (15mm with original GP-signed winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/8 inches long by just over 1/2 an inch wide (without crown) and it is fitted on a gold finished bracelet that makes the overall size 6-1/2 inches. I am also including a classic black cord bracelet (new old stock) with gold color fittings if you prefer that look or have a larger wrist – I can easily adjust the cord length to any length before mailing. It is powered by its original and high grade, 17 jewel gold finished manual wind Girard-Perregaux mechanism that has been fully serviced by my skilled watchmaker David to ensure it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The silver, enamel dial is in great condition, just a touch of age. It features raised gold numbers and hour markers and original gold, Lance-style hands. Signed Girard Perregaux below the 12.
The solid glass crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The case is 14 Karat Solid Yellow Gold and in excellent shape, complete with cobalt blue inlaid enamel fancy lugs. The matching yellow gold finished winding crown is marked GP for Girard-Perregaux and in excellent condition, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over I see that the back lid is in excellent order, retaining its original brushed (satin) finish and free of any wear or engravings. It is stamped 14K GOLD at one edge. Inside I find a clean, manual wind yellow gold color mechanism that is signed Girard-Perregaux & Co., Swiss – 17 Seventeen Jewels - 53 AE 650 - GXM. The inside case lid is stamped with model number “B1803” and bG/P for Girard-Perregaux below this. The name “Ross” is the case maker.
This watch has been cleaned, oiled & regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It is fitted on a vintage gold finished bracelet that will fit a wrist up to 6-1/2 inches in size and I am also including a black cord bracelet as well (new old stock). If you have a larger wrist I can make sure the cord bracelet will FIT your wrist – just tell me what size you need and I’ll have it done before mailing, no charge. All in all a uniquely designed, 14k solid gold and enamel vintage cocktail watch from one of Switzerland’s best watch companies…she’s a beauty!p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers.
