UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE (UKCI) STUDENT TRAVEL GRANT

2018

OVERVIEW

Funded through the UK Confucius Institute (UKCI), this grant provides UK students with financial support toward international and domestic travel for China-related conferences, research and study.

GRANT FOCUS AREAS

UKCI is interested in funding UK students pursuing China-focused academic endeavors. There are two categories of the student scholarship:

  • Graduate Students Research Travel Grant: $1,500 (limit per grant) x 10 to support UK graduate students for China-related research, including trips to conferences.
  • Undergraduate Students Travel Grant: $1000 (limit per grant) x 30 to support travel to China on UK’s faculty directed travel courses with UK Education Abroad or UK organized trip to China.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be full-time students at the University of Kentucky.
  • Grants cannot be deferred, and recipients may only hold one active UKCI grant at a time. Funds are unrestricted, but must be used in accordance with standard University of Kentucky funding policies.

Note: A student can only be awarded one category of award each academic year.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS for Graduate Research Scholarship: students seeking grant funding will be required to complete an application form. Click here to apply. The following are required.

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. Proposal Narrative: Proposals should be no more than 2 pages, single-spaced, 12 pt. font, and should include the following:

a)A description of the overall research project and the time-line for its completion. This description should include an explication of what the research project is about, its central research question(s), and the significance of these. An outline of the project’s relationship to relevant literature may be included.

  1. If funding is sought for the conduct of research, include a brief description of the specific research activity to be supported by the grant, including the methods and modes of analysis to be employed and the need, if travel funds are requested, to travel to specific locations.
  2. If funding sought is for attendance at a conference, please explain the nature of the conference and why attendance will further the applicant’s research project

b)All proposals should include information on the knowledge of, or improvement regarding, things Chinese that is expected to result from the proposed research/conference/field-trip/development.

  1. Recommendation

a)Proposals must be supported by a letter from the applicant’s faculty adviser or DGS explaining how the proposed activity contributes to the development of his or her research and to China-related knowledge.

  1. Any additional information relevant to the proposed research.
  1. Proposed budget: clearly proposes how funds would be used and any other sources of funding.

b)The relevance of the proposed trip to the student’s course of study.

c)Information on the understanding, knowledge, or improvement that is expected to result from the proposed trip.

a)Proposals must be supported by a letter from the faculty member explaining how the proposed activity will contribute to the applicant’s academic success and to the further enhancement of China-related understanding.

  1. Any additional information relevant to the proposed research.
  1. Proposed budget: clearly proposes how funds would be used and any other sources of funding.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The UKCI Steering Committee’s Student Travel Grant Sub-committee will evaluate all proposals and make the final decisions regarding the awards. The criteria used in evaluating proposals include:

Likely contribution of the research or trip to advancing understanding or knowledge of China; likelihood that the research can be carried out as proposed; significance of the proposed activity to the student’s course of study.

DEADLINES

The deadline for 2018 proposals is February 15, 2018.
