Thank you for your interest in arranging a field trip to Keweenaw National Historical Park and the Calumet Visitor Center. There is a lot to see and do within the exhibit area: oral histories to listen to, silent films to view, maps to study, and films to watch. There are also hundreds of artifacts on display and many interpretive panels to read. There is not a particular way to visit and go through the exhibits although we do recommend the following options as these provide for a richer and more organized tour:
1. Schedule your visit by calling (906) 483-3028.
2. Have the park ranger greet and orient your group to the visitor center.
3. Divide your students into groups of 15 or less.
4. Have at least one adult for every 10-15 students.
5. Assign small groups to visit the different exhibit areas (first floor, second floor, 14 minute film).
6. Please assign an adult to the elevator or ask students to use the stairwell.
7. Remember, this building serves not only as our visitor center, but as a museum as well. Please remind students to be respectful of the artifacts and exhibits.
8. Gathering space is available on all three floors if you would like to gather your students and have a wrap up or quiet time for question and answer.
9. If you have questionnaires or assignments for students to complete while here, please have them use pencils and bring something for them to write on.
10. Please provide any feedback, suggestions, or ideas to the staff at the front desk.
Please also keep in mind the following rules and courtesies when visiting the Calumet Visitor Center:
1. No food, drink, or gum is allowed in the building.
2. No running or yelling within the building and stairwells.
3. The visitor center is open to the public while school groups are visiting. Please be respectful of the other visitor’s time and space as they go through the exhibits.
The Calumet Visitor Center’s hours vary based on the time of the year. Please call the park at
906-337-3168 if you have any questions. We strongly recommend educators tour the Calumet Visitor Center before bringing students in order to be prepared for their self-guided tour. Due to variability in staffing, we need to know in advance the size of groups and the time they will be visiting.
Thank you again for your interest. We look forward to seeing you and your students!
