Runco is an internationally recognized creativity researcher and the new E. Paul Torrance Professor of Creative Studies and Gifted Education at the University of Georgia, College of Education. He has been the editor of the Creativity Research Journal since 1988. The National Association for Gifted Children honored Runco with the E. In 1997, Runco served as president of the American Psychological Association's Division 10 and was named a fellow of the division in 1995. He received a Spencer Foundation research grant during 1988-89 and was awarded the Creative Education Foundation Research Award in 1988.

Runco was recently quoted in the July 10, 2010 Newsweek article about creativity in the USA entitled “The Creativity Crisis.”

Sponsored by a grant from the BB&T Leadership Institute and the College of Fine Arts and Communication, this lecture precedes the ECU 2010 Gifted Education Conference Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the ECU Campus, Murphy Center, Greenville, North Carolina.

ARTICLE: THE CREATIVITY CRISIS

For the first time, research shows that American creativity is declining. What went wrong and how we can fix it? Overwhelmed by curriculum standards, American teachers warn there’s no room in the day for a creativity class. Kids are fortunate if they get an art class once or twice a week. But to scientists, this is a non sequitur, borne out of what University of Georgia’s Mark Runco calls “art bias.”

OPPORTUNITY FOR MUSIC ACCOMPANIST

Voices Together Singers is a performing chorus of musicians with developmental disabilities that are establishing themselves not only as a quality performing arts ensemble but as a group that advocates for themselves and is in the process of establishing a new audience base. They have been in our Triangle communities performing at various events by invitation. As The Singers offer these performances to the public, the experience of the audiences will be not only broadened because of the individuals that we are including but will be deepened by the understanding of the potential of this under-served and underestimated population in our

communities.

Voices Together Singers is searching for an accompanist and also someone to collaborate who has experience training voices. Rehearsals are from 7pm to 8pm in Cary on Tuesdays, and there are one to two performances each month. If you are interested (or know someone who is!), call Jenna Witcher at 919.627.4565.

VOTE FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS FUNDING HAS BEGUN

Limeades for Learning is a national cause-branding program of SONIC in partnership with DonorsChoose.org to support U.S. public school teachers in local communities. SONIC will provide essential funds needed for learning materials and innovative techniques to inspire learning. There are 402 projects listed for North Carolina this year. To vote for your favorite project, go online to www.LimeadesForLearning.com to search for your favorite public school teacher’s project. Cast your vote. You can repeat the process once a day to help your favorite teacher’s project get enough votes to be funded. SONIC® donated $637,516 in 2009.

Find your favorite public school teacher's classroom project. It could be a teacher in your community or just a project that really speaks to you. Voting began August 30th. Then cast your vote. You can vote once daily. Projects receiving the most votes each week will be funded every Friday. Votes carry over from week to week, so vote every day and see how your favorite project is progressing.
