Resume Screening Check-list

General Overview

Review for General Appearance:

Is resume easy to read, meaning that it is well organized with clear headings, brief statements of responsibilities (without a lot of over-used jargon), and bulleted points for emphasizing achievements? Is it short and concise…preferably one page, two at the most? Is bold type and underlining used effectively such that it trains your eye to pertinent information?

Review for Spelling/ Grammatical Errors:

Anyone can make a mistake, but two or more shows lack of attention to detail.

Objective/ Summary Statements:

If Objective statement is included, does it suggest in any way that Candidate is NOT fully committed to the role being applied for? In the Summary, are the Candidate’s career highlights supported in the body of the resume?

Education/ Professional Certifications:

Does Candidate have Degree? IsDegree from an accredited College or University…and does it satisfy what is specified in the posted Job Description? Is Degree conferred named and date listed?

Citizenship Status:

Is Candidate eligible to work in the US as result of either being a citizen of the United States, a noncitizen national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, or an Alien authorized to work?

Work History:

Has Candidate had too many job changes (i.e., multiple ≤ 2 year job periods), or spent too long at one Company (i.e., 9+ years). Are there prolonged gaps between positions not accounted for with explanation for leaving last Company? Are Month and Year listed for all jobs held in last 10 years.

Size of Business Environment:

Does size ($) of Candidate’s past Business responsibilities adequately prepare them for role being applied for?

Location:

Does Candidate’s home location present any commuting issues? For roles requiring travel, is home in reasonable proximity to a major airline hub?

Personal Information:

Does Candidate list hobbies, or other extra-curricular activities,etc. that might represent a conflict of interest or otherwise prevent them from carrying out the duties of the role being applied for?

For Out of Town Candidates

Relocation:

Is candidate open to relocation? Would they be able to relocate themselves…or will package need to be included in potential offer? Does Candidate own or rent home…and how might that impact start date?
