Sports Instructor/Youth Activity Leader

Job Title: Activity Leader (Youth/Preschool Sports Instructor)

Pay: $10-13/hr (Depending on Education/Experience)

Job Term: Part Time – Seasonal 15-30 hrs/wk (Starts Fall 2013, Open until positions filled)

Job Description: East Portland Community Center is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic sports instructor to teach entry level sports to a very diverse community. The classes will range from ages 3-12yrs. Classes will include, but are not limited to, baseball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, active games and more. Class durations will range from 30 min – 1 hr.

The job duties will include:

·  Instruct classes; demonstrate knowledge, skill & ability in youth sports with an emphasis on sportsmanship, teamwork, fundamentals and safety

·  Communicate with staff regarding needs for supplies, etc

·  Organizing and maintaining equipment in highly used gym storage closet

·  Develop rapport with class members and respond to questions & concerns

·  Deal effectively with conflict resolution and be able to communicate with participants, other staff and parents

·  Maintain control of students & facility area at all times to ensure safe & effective classes

In addition we are interested in cross-training our sports staff to be able to supervise and work within our teen program. These activities may include our youth after school program, teen classes, and sports tournaments/leagues. The job duties would be interacting and keeping teens engaged in a positive recreation atmosphere. Areas of supervision may include gymnasium, game area, studio and/or classrooms. Ability to work with teens is desirable, but not required for the youth sports instructor position.

Required Qualifications:

·  Ability to instruct physical and sport related activities with an emphasis on safety

·  Must have some experience working with youth (ages 3-17)

·  Hard worker with flexible schedule (may have to work weekends/evenings)

·  Well rounded knowledge of a variety of sports and games that can be taught an appropriate age level

·  Must be comfortable working with a variety of sports equipment

·  Energetic and genuine interest, patience & enthusiasm while working with youth

·  Comfortable working with youth in a socially, culturally, economically, and physically diverse community.

·  Skill in working effectively with youth and parents

Recommended Qualifications:

·  Experience teaching/coaching youth/preschool sports (soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.)

·  Experience working with youth in a socially, culturally, economically, and physically diverse community.

·  Recreation experience with youth: (ie: camp counselor, class instructor, youth supervisor)

·  Comfortable supervising teen activities (ie: open-gym basketball, tournaments, other games and activities)

·  Ability to work with behavior challenged and/or special needs youth is a plus.
