Overview of the Week:
In Language Arts, we will read a few new stories this week, includingHilda Hen’s Scary Night (a big book), Jan Brett books (our new author of the month), holiday books, as well as our “just right books.” During reading workshop, students will work on comprehension skills with an emphasis on: retelling a story emphasizing the important parts. Students will practice reading with partners and helping each other when they are stuck. In terms of phonics, students will work on their individual sorts and complete activities using the spelling pattern/sound throughout the week. As a whole class, we will learn to associate the consonant clusters br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr with the sounds they represent. We will learn how to read contractions with ‘s. In writing we are continuing to work on writing complete sentences that begin with a capital letter and end with the correct punctuation.
During Writer’s Workshop, we will continue to focus on getting more writing on a page. These mini-lessons will help students elaborate on their small moment stories. As writer’s, the students will think hard and make a movie in their minds, and/or say detailed stories aloud before beginning to write.
In math we will continue with Unit 4. The students will use a ten as a strategy to subtract. An example of this strategy: 15-9=___ Display 15 counters and a ten frame. Use the counters and tens frame to model. What is the first step? (put 9 red counters in the ten frame)What is the next step? (add one more yellow counter to make a ten) What is the next step?( add more yellow counters to make 15) How do you find the answer? (count the yellow counters) 15-9=6 At the end of the week, the students will use the break apart strategy to subtract. An example of the break apart strategy, Amy had 12 dog treats. Her dog ate 4 treats. How many treats are left? Students will fill the first tens frame with 10 and put two counters in the second ten frame. Then the students will need to remove 4 counters . (remove 2 from the second 10 frame and 2 from the first ten frame) How many counters are left? (8)
This week in Social Studies each student will create his/her power point slide in class for the Traditions Celebration. Mrs. Spoerl, our technology expert, will be in to assist the class with this activity. We will continue to study how different cultures and countries celebrate the holidays.
We will also participate in the “Hour of Code” this week by enjoying some fun coding activities in class.
Enjoy this wonderful time of year!
