Job Title: SENDCO/SENCO

Responsible to: Headteacher

Location: Biddulph High School

Job Purpose:

  • To contribute to raising standards of student achievement by: ensuring high quality teaching and learning by the SEND team; working with departments across the school to ensure that the best strategies are employed for SEND pupils; and by leading by example through the teaching and modelling of a timetable of lessons.
  • To support the LG in the achievement of whole school and department goals
  • To work in accordance with the directions laid out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document
  • To satisfy the Department of Education’s Teaching standards

SENDCoLeadership

Teaching and learning

  • Identify and adopt the most effective teaching approaches for students with SENDfor use in own teaching and share approach with colleagues.
  • Identify and adopt the most effective interventions such as reading club or group interventions for students with SEND and ensure the effective running of these, monitoring their impact.
  • Monitor quality of teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of students with SEND in the work of the SEND department, and in liaison with the Headteacher, where appropriate across the school.
  • Identify and teach study skills that will develop students’ ability to work independently.
  • Liaise with other schools/educational establishments to ensure continuity of support and learning when transferring students with SEND.
  • Contribute to whole school training on teaching and learning strategies for SEND pupils.

Recording and assessment

  • Work with colleagues to set challenging targets for raising achievement among students with SEND.
  • Ensure robust tracking systems are in place to collect and interpret specific student level assessment data allowing the school to identify value added by its quality first teaching programme and intervention strategies.
  • Set up systems for screening students at “point of entry” identifying, assessing and reviewing provision for SEND children once identified.
  • Update the Headteacher and Board of Trustees on the effectiveness of provision for students with SEND.
  • Develop understanding of learning needs and the importance of raising achievement among students.
  • Attend EHCP and IEP review meetings, parent evening consultations keeping parents informed about their child’s progress.
  • Ensure the school EHCP register is up to date and all stake holders are fully informed about support programmes in place/planned.
  • Ensure EHCPs are monitored regularly, are live documents and their impact is assessed and progress can be evidenced.
  • Be involved and qualified in Psychometric testing and assessment and access arrangements

Leadership and Management

  • Encourage all members of staff to recognise and fulfil their statutory responsibilities to students with SEND and understand the importance of QFT taking ownership of additional provision and the progress children (with SEND) make in their class/teaching group.
  • Take the lead in constructing the schools provision map ensuring intervention programmes target the right students and staff expertise is deployed appropriately.
  • Provide training opportunities for learning support assistants, teachers and other stake holders to learn about SEND and work with other colleagues to deliver training on specific intervention programmes.
  • Disseminate good practice in SEND across the school.
  • Identify resources needed to meet the needs of students with SEND and advise the Headteacher of priorities for expenditure.
  • Ensure effective deployment of the staff and resources in the department to maximise opportunities for SEND pupils
  • Contribute to Senior Leadership Meetings on the effectiveness of SEND provision in the school and be prepared to share this information with other stake holders.
  • Take the lead in liaising, co-ordinating and managing all external support offered to school locally and from the agency
  • Oversee medical needs in school
  • Oversee testing and provision for access arrangements for eligible pupils
  • To set the strategic direction for the development of the SEND & Inclusion Department

General Responsibilities

  1. General Teaching
  • To have high expectations of all students based on relevant data
  • To teach using a variety of delivery methods which will stimulate learning, meeting the demands of the curriculum & the needs of the students
  • To assess, record & report on the attainment, attendance & progress of students keeping such records as are required
  • To provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports & references relating to individual or groups of students
  • To prepare & update subject materials, including schemes of work
  • To maintain discipline in accordance with the school’s procedures and encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour & standards of work
  • To assess students’ work in line with school policies & procedures referring to student performance targets
  • To support the LGin carrying out performance management reviews under the direction of the Head teacher
  • To monitor, evaluate and report on overall standards of effective teaching and learning, including good classroom management practice and homework, through regular observation of teachers’ lessons and scrutiny of students’ work
  • To attend internal and external meetings when necessary
  • To develop links with the main feeder schools
  1. Curriculum Provision & Development
  • To assist in the development of appropriate syllabuses, resources, schemes of work & teaching strategies
  • To contribute to the development & implementation of the subject’s strategic development plan
  • To plan & prepare courses and lessons
  • To attend & contribute to subject meetings
  • To contribute to a ‘safe’ department by ensuring that you present a safe and tidy teaching environment to students
  • Be responsible for ensuring that all necessary Health and Safety checks, risk assessment requirements etc. are carried out in accordance with school policy, legal requirements etc.
