Background

The Observatory of Conflict and Violence Prevention (OCVP, is an independent, non-political and non-profit Somali organization that tracks peacebuilding and state building progress in all regions of Somaliland and Somalia. OCVP provides independent and reliable empirical research and analysis into the issues of conflict, peace and security that can inform policies and programmes in the country. In order to help strengthen peace and statebuilding processes and provide real-time data that can inform state and non-state actors’ efforts on peacebuilding and state building progresses, OCVP maintains three core areas of activity:

  • Research and Analysis: Employing mixed method approach of both quantitative and qualitative approach to data collection and provide district level data and analysis on issues of peace, conflict, security and sustainable development; and gathering community perceptions of the effectiveness of public services provision related to peacebuilding and state building.
  • Knowledge Management and Outreach: In addition to managing the data from the field and analytical reports as well as training materials and other publication produced by OCVP; the department actively disseminates research findings to local and international audiences, and leads the fundraising activities for organizational sustainability.
  • Training and Translation: develops context-specific training materials for formal and informal peace actors at national, regional and district levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:-

Under the supervision of General-Director, the Researcher will be responsible for:

Communication:

  1. Support the improvement of OCVP policies, strategies , plans and implementation of communication strategy;
  2. Lead on the development of policies, strategies and plans for knowledge building and knowledge sharing;
  3. Identify and formulate Outreach and Community Engagement findings, lessons-learned and recommendations to be integrated into the OCVP data dissemination strategy;
  4. Collaborate and coordinate with other local NGOs, UN agencies, government agencies, and other organizations on Outreach and Community Engagement;
  5. Edit, format and review OCVP products for further dissemination;
  6. Lead on the effort for publication of OCVP Annual Report, Quarterly News Letter, Policy Briefs and other documents of high value;

Fundraising:

  1. Work towards raising funds for OCVP activities ( identifying, applying and following-up);
  2. Regularly monitor donor websites, and other websites and identify and inform fundraising opportunities matching with the OCVP vision and mission and to overall OCVP long-time strategic planning and financial sustainability plan;
  3. Prepare implementation plan for OCVP 5 Years Strategic Plan and 5 Years Financial Sustainability Plan ;
  4. Develop fundraising strategy for OCVP;
  5. Assist the General-Director by writing concept notes, project ideas and project proposals and ensure their timely submission;

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Management, Developmental Studies, Communications , Peace Studies, Journalism or any other relevant field with minimum of 3 years’ experience in Communication, Strategic Development and Fundraising.

Skills and Attributes

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication and cross-cultural skills requires;
  • Experience in the use of computer and office software packages and handling of web based management system;
  • Knowledge of project cycle management and fundraising;
  • Very strong knowledge of English( Somali Language is an asset);
