Welcome to the new Careers year and to all new and returning students!
Careers on “WOODLE“and the CAREERS ROOM
Make sure you make use of the Careers “Woodle” pages at Woodhouse !
Click on “Careers” tab on Woodle toolbar, then find tabs like “choosing a career” and “Work Experience and Volunteering” all with lots of useful info and links to click.
The Careers Room is open 9.30am – 4.00pm most days for research and quiet work.
We have careers and university guides, prospectuses, leaflets, magazines, job information, course guides, employer information, and volunteering and Gap-year information.
(The Careers notice board is in the corridor outside- Current information is always here)
Drop in slots are usually 11-11.30 Mon-Thurs and long sessions Fridays- (see notices)

Prospective Medical students:
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital-“So you want to be a Doctor”- One Day course - 23rd November at the RNOH in Stanmore- Cost £60, with lunch.
With lectures on medical degrees, being a GP, Hospital practice, Career Pathways, discussions, and demonstrations. We have two application forms - max 2 per college can apply
You must apply by post / fax to arrive by 30/9 to be sure of a place.

WORLD SKILLS 2011 EVENT
WorldSkills London 2011 will take place on Wednesday 5 to Saturday 8 October 2011 at EXCEL LONDON and is the greatest FREE skills Competition, careers and jobs event on the planet. There is still time if you are able to book this week, by Friday 30 September. Visit www.worldskillslondon2011.com/visit.
Upper 6th students:
Do we have your Work Experience or Volunteering Reference ?
If you did work experience or volunteering since starting, please take a copy of your reference to the office to place on your file as soon as possible.
If you have taken part in other schemes, evidence of this and your own records/ reflections are also very useful. Tutors will then read these when doing your UCAS REFERENCE.
Upper 6th students:
University Applications 2012 -Woodhouse deadlines
You need to complete your application online, see Dipa Shah for checks, then send it electronically “to referee” by this date:
September 26th Science, Pharmacy, Maths, Computer Science, Midwifery, Nursing, Engineering
October 3rd Management, Business Studies, Economics, Accounting, Politics
October 10th Drama, Arts & Humanities, Languages, Architecture
October 17th Remaining applications
Art/Design applications - Check with Miss Bower or Mr Nethercleft
References are then added and your application is sent by us to UCAS.
This takes 4-5 weeks. UCAS admin contact: Dipa Shah (office next to Miss Robinson)
Help with Personal Statements
· Your Progression Booklet has a section on essentials of statement writing- copies in careers, along with other handouts.
· Once you have written your statement you must go to your personal tutor or subject tutor first for feedback. FINAL versions only can be checked at Careers drop-ins.
Not sure what you want to study at University, or if you want a gap year?
· Remember to find out your “predicted grades” first, to help you choose realistically.
· Your Progression Booklet has relevant sections to help you (copies in Careers)
· Go to the WOODLE Careers pull down, “Progression to Further study” page- with lots
of tools and links to help you.
· Make a careers appointment- put your name down on the list on Careers Office door.

If you haven’t been to any Open Days to check out Uni’s or courses - Now is the time!

Ernst and Young is a major Finance consultancy corporation.
They now have two ways for school leavers to start work immediately and progress to paid-for Chartered Accountancy qualifications or a 5 year consultancy training programme, as well as a scholarship programme to support you in your studies at University, and INSIGHT DAYS- one day experiences doing a practical task- to help assess your abilities.

Lattitude Global Volunteering
This long- established Volunteer-Gap charity runs schemes in many countries of the world- where volunteers work on meaningful community projects.
They currently have a limited number of North London bursaries worth up to £500 so you can go for much less than usual (some fund raising needed).
