Job Title: Special Events Manager

Responsible to: Head of Corporate Partnerships and Special Events

Department: Fundraising

Purpose: To be responsible for the organisation of a number of special fundraising events, to achieve agreed net income targets and objectives in line with the corporate fundraising strategy and Anthony Nolan brand.

Background

Anthony Nolan is a pioneering blood cancer charity and bone marrow donor register. Every day, we match incredible individuals willing to donate their bone marrow or blood stem cells to patients in desperate need of a transplant. Last year we helped find a match for over 1,200 people with blood cancer and other blood disorders.

Anthony Nolan’s total turnover is c£43m pa, of which c£11m pa comes from voluntary income. The Fundraising Division comprises 31 staff, across all main areas of fundraising-Trusts & Major Gifts, Corporate, Events, Community and Individual Giving and are all based in Hampstead, London.

The main current income streams are:

·  Individual giving including Legacies £4.7m pa.

·  Trusts and Major gifts £2.5m pa

·  Events (London Marathon, Great North Run, international challenge events) £2m pa

·  Community fundraising £1.2m pa

·  Corporate fundraising (particularly Charity of the Year partnerships and Special events) £900k pa.

The Daisy Ball is Anthony Nolan’s annual flagship event which has been running for 20 years, and raised over £480k gross in 2014, a large increase on the previous year. The event is run in close conjunction with a volunteer committee of longstanding supporters. Other events include Christmas Carols and a Scottish networking event.

We are now looking to build on the success of this well established programme and to raise more net income for the charity in the next few years and are looking to recruit a Special Events Manager to help us achieve these aims.

The Corporate and Special Events team consists of a Head of team, two Senior Corporate Partnerships Managers and a Corporate Partnerships and Special Events Assistant (to start in Jan 2015). We are looking to recruit a Special Events Manager, to lead the Special Events portfolio.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working with a dedicated committee to produce successful events. A proactive, energetic and flexible individual, you will manage and develop the existing portfolio of special events and identify and pitch for new beneficiary events and partnerships.

Experience of working with a charity committee, managing a major high profile event, working as part of project teams and with external suppliers would be a distinct advantage.

Main Responsibilities:

1.  Manage and develop our existing fundraising Special Events programme, including our annual Daisy Ball, and Christmas Carols.

2.  Manage internal events for Anthony Nolan’s fundraising division which include cultivation events and milestone events including next year a Scottish networking event.

3.  Identify and pitch for potential beneficiary events and other charity prospects and partnerships.

4.  Work very closely with the Daisy Ball and Anthony Nolan Chairman and a committee of 10 volunteers to plan the Daisy Ball. Attend monthly external evening meetings with the committee.

5.  Conduct all of the Daisy Ball event management including, but not exclusively; contract liaison, entertainment bookings, sourcing auction prizes, volunteer management, work with external suppliers, table sales, event literature design, increase sponsorship and manage the event on the night.

6.  Develop and implement a special events programme that delivers net income targets, engages potential and existing supporters and raises public awareness of Anthony Nolan.

7.  Contribute to annual event budget setting and planning. Maintain accurate income and expenditure records for each event to ensure events are organised cost effectively and within an agreed budget.

8.  Work with our Marketing and Communications division, create new innovative marketing strategies for special events and input ideas on new events.

9.  Identify key Corporate and Media partners to support special events, identify and implement sponsorship deals and utilise all contacts in order to secure auction and raffle prizes and other gifts in kind.

10.  Develop long term relationships with key volunteers to maximise their support for Anthony Nolan. Produce event materials with our Design team, including tickets, event brochures, posters and invitations.

11.  Brief and manage external suppliers, ensuring all suppliers work to agreed Terms and Conditions.

12.  Review and evaluate the performance of Anthony Nolan’s special events by writing post event reports and plan future activities accordingly.

13.  Responsible for the day to day management of special events.

Other Responsibilities:

1.  Create and develop opportunities and initiatives to promote the Charity’s work and activities positively at all times.

2.  Be an active member of the Corporate Partnerships and Special Events team contributing positively to future planning as required.

3.  Undertake any other activity reasonably requested in line with responsibilities/post by the Head of team and/or other senior Anthony Nolan management.

Person Specification

Essential attributes:

1.  Proven experience of managing successful high profile events.

2.  Experience working with volunteer committees to organise events.

3.  An excellent written and verbal communicator.

4.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with a range of internal and external audiences including senior volunteers.

5.  A proactive and energetic personality, flexible and enthusiastic.

6.  Ability to prioritise and manage many concurrent tasks.

7.  Drive and determination to deliver challenging budget targets.

8.  Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

9.  Ability to work well on own initiative and as part of a team.

10.  Enthusiasm and commitment to Anthony Nolan’s mission and values, and for fundraising as a discipline.

11.  Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
