Statistics New Zealand – 2013 Census Update

The build-up to census day (Tuesday, 5 March 2013) is well underway and Statistics New Zealand’s census team is already engaging with their stakeholders. This includes expanding their Census Advocacy Programme beyond local government to include district health boards, universities, iwi, and other Māori organisations.

Representatives from Statistics NZ have been on the road in the lower and central North Island talking to advocates and users about progress towards the 2013 Census. Visits to Auckland, Northland and some areas of the South Island are planned for June.

Their field collections team will soon start advertising for the 23 area managers needed for the next census.

They have developed a Canterbury census collection strategy that includes:

  • employing an additional area manager to oversee the census collection in certain quake-affected areas
  • appointing collectors to these areas who have additional training and support
  • providing additional information to help respondents in Canterbury complete their forms.

They are aware that some data users are concerned about the extended period until 2006 Census data is updated. To help meet this need, they have compiled Alternative sources of data for 2011 Census variables, available on their website. It links to reports and data from Statistics NZ and other government and non-government organisations.

The Census data user guide is also available on their website. It is an easy-to-use reference for users of data from the New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings. It answers common questions users may have about the processes and procedures involved in collecting and processing census data, and interpretation and use of census data.

AskShareGive – The newest idea in online sharing

AskShareGive is a new not-for-profit website where people can share their time, skills, transport and old or unwanted goods. While sharing old and unwanted goods is a big part of the site, requests for volunteers and skill/time related listings are also proving popular. There are people offering dog walking, business advice, befriending and budget advice and guitar lessons. Giving makes people feel good and volunteering often creates win-win situations. Community groups have really grabbed hold of the site too with members that include the SPCA, KidsCan, Sustainable Trust, Christchurch Cat Rescue and Youthline.

The website is user friendly and incorporates a rating system similar to trademe so people can choose who they share with, which is important in a site like AskShareGive where you are placing trust in people.

TRAINING, EDUCATION, RESOURCES AND CONFERENCES

HINZ seminar 21 June 2012 - Bringing the Electronic Health Record to Life

21 June 2012, Aotea Centre, Auckland

With keynote speaker Ed Hammond this seminar is sure to attract significant attendance given the involvement of such a high profile international health informatics leader.

The morning sessions will be on Health Informatics Science and Applications, with a focus on EHR, interoperability and translational research and Ed Hammond will present EHR - The Killer App. His key message is that the time has now come to develop a full-blown EHR as technical, societal and other barriers have substantially been dealt with. He will also touch on what’s happening in the US – including Meaningful Use, the various initiatives including CTSA, SHARP, CER, and others.

A panel session will represent national/government, regional/DHB, primary/community, and consumer perspectives. We are continuously stacking up considerable experience from a multitude of health IT projects; experimenting with regional CDRs with a capability for national views, exploring Integrated/Shared Care paradigms, tying up loose ends in the primary care space (e.g. PMS requirements, GP2GP), and developing new clinical information systems. But what is going to happen Beyond 2014 in New Zealand in terms of eHealth and in particular electronically captured person-centric health information? Will these projects add up to make up a proper EHR? What’s the vision and how do current strategies and implementations map into that?
