.

Purpose: To provide common background information on classical mythology for reference throughout the year.

Essential Understandings:Literary patterns recur throughout time and across cultures.

Literature both reflects and influences the culture during which it was written and also during the time in which it is set.

Text to Read:Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, by Edith Hamilton

Read Chapters 1-14 and Chapters 20-23

Please purchase or borrow from the library your own personal copy of the book. (If this is not possible, please contact us-we have some available for students to borrow, but we highly recommend having your own copy.)

Assessments and Due Dates:

  1. There is a three part written assignment that will be due the first day of school.
  2. There will be a written assignment based on the reading that will occur within the first week of school that will count as 25% of the summer assignment.
  3. There will be a test on the book within the first interim period. While there will be a little time for questions, the students are expected to have the assignments and be ready to answer specific questions about the various myths.
  4. All assignments will be graded by the first interim marking period.

**The whole assignment (after reading the book) should not take more than about four hours. Do your best, but do not get bogged down in minutiae. Variables such as typing speed could also affect the amount of time the assignment requires

Statement of Academic Honesty: Students are expected to do their own work. Copying from online sources will result in a failing grade for that part of the assignment.
