Michigan’s new reform school district, the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan (EAA), through its special education partner, Futures Learning of Michigan, is seeking administrators to oversee special education services in the district. Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the EAA will directly operate 12 school buildings located within the City of Detroit. In future years the EAA may become responsible for in excess of 60 school buildings throughout the state of Michigan.

For the 2012-2013 school year Futures Education is seeking to employ 2 Directors / Supervisors of Special Education and at least 12 Instructional Team Leaders.

Directors/Supervisors will work as part of a senior administrative team with other experienced special and general education leaders to design, plan, implement and oversee a comprehensive full range special education program based on goals and objectives of the EAA and focused on breaking the traditional approach to education and developing a student centered, success focused educational environment.

Team Leaders will tobe an educational leader and advocate for students with diverse learning needs within the school setting. He/she will actively support the assigned schools to ensure that a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement of student with diverse learning needs if evident. The instructional team leader collaborates with appropriate individuals so that the educational needs of student with diverse learning needs are appropriately addressed and in compliance with applicable federal and state laws.

All positions will be as employees of Futures Education, a private management company currently providing services to over 60,000 students nationwide. Compensation is dependent on education and experience and includes a fringe benefit package, insurance coverage and other benefits. Futures Education employees are not members of the Michigan Public School employees Retirement System but the benefit package does include a 401K option.

POSITION SUMMARY: The role of the instructional team leader is to be an educational leader and advocate for students with diverse learning needs within the school setting. He/she will actively support the assigned schools to ensure that a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement of student with diverse learning needs if evident. The instructional team leader collaborates with appropriate individuals so that the educational needs of student with diverse learning needs are appropriately addressed and in compliance with applicable federal and state laws. Must be willing to work in any schools assigned to the EAA in Wayne County.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Support, mentor, and model best practice instructional strategies and techniques.

2.Mentor staff in the delivery of the unified service delivery plan.

3.Exhibit a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement for ALL STUDENTS.

4.Attend EAA academic meetings and be actively involved in the Student Support Teams all grade levels.

5.Effectively communicate procedures and best practices to site administration and staff..

6.Facilitate staff development activities, related to students with diverse learning needs.

7.Fully participate with building partners and community partners in providing services to students and their families.

8.Inform site administration of special education concerns/issues that may be supervisory in nature.

9.Assist administration, licensed, and support staff with the effective implementation of federal, state, and local mandates.

10.Ensure that students with diverse learning needs are receiving a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

11.Assist parents in problem solving and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of their child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

12.Provide staff with information on scientifically-based instruction, positive behavioral supports (including Applied Behavior Analysis), and other effective classroom management techniques.

13.Assist staff in providing technical information, preparing IEP to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

14.Assist IEP teams in the development and implementation transition plans.

15.Effectively train building staff to implement IEP system.

16.Work professionally with administrators, staff, parents and the community.

17.Participate in other job related duties related to the position assigned

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

4.Demonstrate effectiveness in planning, organizing, and coordinating meaningful activities for appropriate individuals and/or groups in a pleasant, professional manner.

5.Exhibit proficiency in the use of the EAA’s electronic IEP system.

6.Support and/or deliver professional development activities for staff as they relate to students with diverse learning needs.

7.Work cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members.

8.Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and EAA policy.

9.Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff.

10.Work in a collegial manner with all EAA staff to provide students an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

11.Maintain and improve professional competence.

12.Communicate effectively both written and orally.

13.Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Valid Michigan teaching certificate at least one special education endorsement.
  2. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university.
  3. Three years of successful experience in special education programs and/or related services.
