Get to know your course

These questions will give you an opportunity to explore your course in TLM.

·  Check all the answers that apply.

·  Write down your answers on paper first. (Learners do that when they take an online test, too.)

·  Ask for help if you need it. Write down any questions you have. We’ll talk at the end.

·  Once you’ve finished, enter your responses in TLM & go grab a coffee. J

1.  Over the next few weeks, you’ll be learning online. In an online course

q  you work at your own pace

q  you do weekly activities & attend classes just like a traditional course

2.  In this course, you will design learning activities

q  on your own

q  with other people

3.  When you work in a group online, you should

q  spend time getting to know the people in your group

q  establish routines that are easy to follow

q  choose someone in the group to coordinate the group’s work

q  work in real time (i.e. in Collaborate) at the early stages of planning so that you can work faster

q  resolve conflicts in real time, not through email

q  visualize your ideas (i.e. on the whiteboard in Collaborate) so that everyone gets the message clearly

4.  You will submit assignments

q  online (for example -- in TLM)

q  in class

q  by posting them on a discussion board

5.  Part of your mark for this class is based on your participation on the discussion board. Meaningful participation is

q  sharing your ideas & experiences

q  encouraging someone to give an example

q  drawing someone into the conversation by asking them a question

q  telling someone what you’ve learned from them

q  asking someone for more detail

q  making a comment that shows the connection between two people’s ideas or experiences

q  suggesting a resource

6.  You should post to the discussion board

q  whenever you want

q  whenever your facilitator emails you

q  at the beginning of each week

q  by the end of each week

7.  When you learn online you can’t necessarily see the people you’re learning with so there can be more misunderstanding. To help get your message across, it helps to

q  write in a way that helps people see your body language -— for example “I jumped for joy!”

q  use emoticons when you write -- for example :) :(

q  write less than you ordinarily would

q  help others visualize what I’m saying by sharing pictures, graphics or videos to explain my ideas

8.  A good post is

q  one or two words long

q  one or two paragraphs long

q  one or two pages long

9.  Collaborate is our online classroom. It’s where we meet in real time. When an Collaborate session is scheduled, it’s better to

q  participate during that time

q  watch the recordings posted after the session

q  either is ok

10.  If you can’t attend the session, you should

q  email your facilitator

q  email your facilitator & watch the recording

q  email your facilitator, watch the recording & do the “make-up” activity

11.  As part of a course, learners are often asked to do presentations in Collaborate. To get ready, learners are often advised to

q  prepare & practice -- especially before your first few sessions

q  work with a “tech buddy” like an experienced online facilitator or an instructional designer -- especially during your first few sessions

q  be gentle on yourself -- mistakes are a great way to learn & get better

12.  One of the biggest challenges of learning online is learning how to manage your time and space. Some effective strategies are:

q  developing a schedule or “rhythm” for yourself so that you’re participating regularly

q  managing the distractions around you before you log in to your course

q  keeping up with the group (i.e. being aware of what’s being posted, responding quickly)

q  reading the discussion board backwards (i.e. from the bottom up) when you get behind

13.  To log into your course, you should go to

q  nscc.ca

q  onlinelearning.nscc.ca/login/

q  moodle.net172.ca/

q  collaborate.com

14.  If you forget your password, you should

q  email your facilitator

q  contact Online Learning by calling 1.877.491.6774 or emailing
