MAN 3301 – Human Resources Management
Recruiting and Selection Module Exercises
Everyone will need to perform two tasks prior to class to complete these exercises:
- Peruse the Sunday paper’s Employment Classifieds. Find an ad for a job that looks interesting to you. It can be the job you’re doing for your job project, what you want to be when you grow up, what you’ve always, “secretly” wanted to be, or just some job that looks interesting.
- Go to O*NET Online, an occupational information site that contains job descriptions for many common occupations (there is a link to this site on my webpage). Select “Find Occupations” and search for the position you’ve selected. You may have to modify your keyword search by typing a more general title for your job and selecting the best from a list your search generates. You can also search by “job family.” You’ll need to print the “SUMMARY” report for class. Read your ad and the job description to make sure they match.

MAN 3301 – Human Resources Management
Human Resources Planning & Recruiting
Armed with your ad and job description, you’ll start working on a recruiting strategy. You DID read the first page and bring in an ad…right?
Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is to allow the student to practice using basic recruiting techniques. Specifically, this exercise practices application development and recruiting source selection.
Content
Working in teams, students will review the ads and job descriptions brought in by team members. They will then begin to develop a recruiting strategy for this position.
Assignment
Part 1 – Application
What changes would you make to the application distributed as part of this exercise? Specifically, you should answer 4 questions:
- What would you remove and why?
- What would you add and why
- What would you keep, but modify and why?
- What would you leave the same and why?
Your answers should reflect use of the red and yellow lights discussed in class as well as recommendations regarding application content.
Part 2 – Application Content
Specific to the job your team selected, what content (KSAs, experience, education, location, etc.) would you look for when reviewing applications submitted for this job?
Part 3 – Sources
What other sources (besides the newspaper ad) would you use to generate an applicant pool for this position. List each and describe your team’s use fully. Be sure to include internal AND external sources. (I’m looking for a minimum of 4!)
