Resource Network Guidelines for iPad or Other Technology Devices

Resource Network continues to receive many requests for iPads and other technological devices. We recognize that such devices, along with the assistive applications available, can be invaluable in supporting individuals with disabilities. Because of the large expense of these requests, the following guidelines have been created to facilitate the request process and to ensure the careful and consistent distribution of funds. These guidelines will be reviewed and updated/adjusted as we continue to gather information. They will also apply to other types of technology devices.

1.  What other sources of funding are available to the family? (Will the CSR process be accessed for any part of this expense?) What other avenues or grant applications have been explored or pursued?

2.  The 32GB iPad, up to and including the Air 2, will be considered for funding. If the family would like to purchase a different model, they would be responsible for funding the difference. (We have been assured that this model is sufficient for the types of apps a person with a disability might be using.)

3.  A protective cover or case must be purchased with the iPad, either at the family’s expense or as part of the request.

4.  A description of the iPad’s or other device’s purpose and/or how and where it will be used should be included.

5.  The individual who will use the iPad or other device must have experience using it and must have demonstrated on multiple occasions that he/she would be successful using it and use the device independently, as evidenced by a service professional (a speech therapist, for example). It must also be clear that the individual will be able to use the iPad or other device successfully at home as well as in other settings. Written documentation signed by the professional must be submitted with the request.

6.  Resource Network will not provide funding for the professional evaluation needed for the written documentation.

7.  Resource Network will not provide funding for protection plans or repairs.

8.  Resource Network will not provide funding for consulting services for iPad or for other device use instruction but encourages other resources to be used, such as user manuals, online manuals, training services offered by some public libraries, colleges/universities, and at Apple stores.

9.  Consideration will also be given to whether a Dynavox or other assistive technology device has already been funded and is currently in use. Information must be provided regarding the effectiveness of other devices in use and why a new device is necessary.

10.  Resource Network may decide to provide only partial funding for iPad or other device requests.

11.  Other expenses may be incurred in owning and using an iPad or other device (accessories, apps that are not assistive in nature, etc.); Resource Network does not provide additional funding for these.

12.  Families/MSC’s may appeal decisions denying RN requests.

Financial assistance to purchase iPads for individuals with disabilities may also be available to families from other organizations. The list of resources changes regularly as grant cycles vary by organization. Please share with us any resources of which you may become aware to help families afford this technology. Please research any of these applicable resources before accessing Resource Network funds.
