Advanced Art

Supplies:

1. 1 sketchbook9x12 is a good size, but you can get smaller

The ones with the spiral are best or the hard back book sketchbooks. The taped ones tend to fall apart too easily and students loose artwork.

2. Drawing pencils (Different variety of pencils) 4H, 2H,HB, 2B, 4B, 6B

You can purchase separately or in packs. It is good for students at this level to begin working with a variety of pencils. As we begin drawing and sketching they will learn how the different pencils make different marks, some lighter or darker than others. Once they have learned how to use the different pencils they will feel more comfortable using what works best for them. Some like to stick with the H side for a lighter mark and are easier to sketch, some like to stick to the B side because they make a darker mark without having to push down hard.

3. 1 magic rub eraser or 1 kneaded eraser

Either of these erasers works best for the artwork we will be doing throughout the year. The pink erasers tend to leave marks and do not erase well.

4. 1 hand-held pencil sharpener

The hand held sharpeners seem to work better with drawing pencils and colored pencils. The mechanical sharpeners eat them up too quickly.

5. Binder½ in or larger (any color) or folder with tabs

Students will put art notes and pictures for drawing in their folders.

6. 12” or 18” ruler

For precision work

7. Pkg. of Prismacolor or Prismacolor Scholar colored pencils (set of 12 or more)

Scholar is good quality and less expensive than the regular Prismacolor pencils. Scholar is good for students at this level of art.

I like to use these pencils because they blend well and pigment is more intense.

8. Pkg. of paintbrushes (variety pack)

Students will use a variety of sizes throughout the year. Students usually like to have some of the smaller brushes so that they can work more precisely.

Supplies can be purchased at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, or some of the Wal-Mart stores have an art supply section where the above items can be purchased. The supplies in the PTO kit are not exactly what you may need.

Students have their own cabinet where they will store their art supplies. They can feel free to bring in any of their own supplies and store them in the cabinet.

Students, over the summer I would like for you to practice drawing. Any techniques or styles of drawing will help you to draw better. Practice makes perfect! Practicing contour drawing, drawing the outside and interior lines of objects or people, this helps to practice your observational drawing skills.

When we get back we will work on a t-shirt design for the Dowell Art Dept. I would like for you to work on some designs over the summer. We will choose the best design as a class. Scott Johnson and Faubion used a more graffiti style of art for their t-shirts, so feel free to be as funky with the design as you would like. Just needs to have Dowell Middle School or DMS on it. If you can incorporate our mascot that would be great, but it isn’t necessary for our design. We just want to show off our Dowell art skills.

This will be our first sketchbook assignment.
