The University of Washington student chapter of the AIAA had another successful year and has increased the number of events it conducts. The UW AIAA chapter goals are to facilitate and improve the community between students, faculty, and industry involved in AIAA and aerospace at the University of Washington.
The UW AIAA chapter hosted a variety of professional events throughout the year to help students network with their peers and companies in the area. In the fall of 2015, the chapter held a resume workshop, where students worked one-on-one with professors and industry representatives on how to market themselves. A few weeks afterward the chapter held a night with industry event, where representatives from aerospace companies in the Seattle area presented their companies and students were able to discuss opportunities. The two events were designed to prepare students for those conversations with potential employers.
In addition, the chapter held a student mentor night during the spring of 2016. Pre-engineering students were paired with student mentors who were currently in the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. During the event, the pre-engineering students were able to meet their fellow aerospace-bound peers and learn from the upperclassmen about the road ahead of them in the department. The event helped foster relationships between the different grades of the department and comradery for the next generation of aerospace engineers.
The University of Washington had a strong showing at the AIAA Section VI student conference this year in Corvallis, Oregon. In the undergraduate category, Mia Lee (“Tunable Bistability of Origami-based Mechanical Metamaterials”), Zhisong Chen (“Leaf-out Origami with Multi-Configuration Stability”), and Lucas Heflin (“Baffled Tube Ram Accelerator”) won first, second, and third, respectively. In the graduate category, Jake Boening (“Design and Experimental Investigation of a Continuously Rotating Detonation Engine Initiated by Azimuthally Sequential Sparking”), Navid Daneshvaran (“Transient Computational Fluid Dynamic Modeling of Baffled Tube Ram Accelerator in Eulerian Frame of Reference”), and Wei-Siang Lay (“Design of a Rail Gun System for Mitigating Disruptions in Fusion Reactors”) won first, second, and third, respectively. All eleven participants showcased the impressive research they conducted in the aerospace department.
The UW’s Design, Build, Fly student team has grown to include 25 active members. This year the team entered two successful planes into the AIAA DBF competition. Their plane placed 25th out of 100 entries, demonstrating the team’s technical ability.
