SMSU Graduate Program in ED and SPED

0:04

My favorite thing with working with kids is when

0:08

They don't understand a concept or idea and you can help explain it to them

0:13

And suddenly that light goes on and it suddenly clicks for them and they understand.

0:17

That’s just such a fun feeling for them to

0:20

Finally understand and be able to be the one to help them understand.

0:26

I actually decide I wanted to be an elementary school teacher back when I was in elementary school. Anytime I would play house,

0:30

I’d play school and I'd be the teacher and I had worksheets and I had different

0:34

Things and my brother was an okay student. This year I started full time as a 5th

0:40

And 6th grade language arts teacher. Along with completing my master's I’ve used a lot of my

0:46

Knowledge and information from the professors to incorporate into my classes.

0:56

In a master’s science and education program,

0:59

Our first emphasis area that we offer is teaching, learning, and leadership. In this emphasis we have teachers who are taking the program

1:07

To enhance their teaching and also to enhance the learning of their students. I graduated from SMSU with my undergrad

1:12

Back in the year 2002,

1:15

And I chose SMSU as a

1:17

Graduate program because it’s close to home and it allowed me to

1:21

Travel there on weeknights, take the classes, and work on the projects with

1:24

Classmates.

1:26

I chose

1:26

Phonics as a topic of study because it's something that my students in

1:31

My 1st grade class deals with on a daily basis.

1:34

It’s something that I feel is very important to their developing reading skills. The literature

1:39

View is a

1:40

Component of the action of research project that we do as a final project in the

1:44

Teaching, learning and leadership program

1:46

In 1st grade the students come in with low ability in reading and they’re so eager to learn and improve

1:53

The smiles on their faces when they bring about new information or reach new challenges is something that you

1:59

Take with you day to day.

2:05

In our sports leadership emphasis

2:08

We have individuals who are interested in working

2:10

At the college level

2:12

As coaches or teaching in the coaching field.

2:18

The reading licensure emphasis is one

2:22

Where teachers can become K-12 specialists of reading.

2:25

In addition we just added English as a second language emphasis

2:32

And so teachers can work with students who are learning how to speak English within the field

2:39

Emphasiarys also that we have that are offered totally online are our Math emphasis and our English emphasis

2:47

This is designed for secondary math and English teachers who would like to enhance their teachings of the students in their classrooms

2:51

They also might be interested in teaching the college in the classroom courses

2:55

Or they may be interested in teaching in the 2 year community college

2:57

Students work hard in our course. There

3:01

Are a lot of papers and there are group presentations

3:04

And things like that they need to do other such assignments

3:07

But it’s very worthwhile

3:12

At the end they say “Oh I didn’t know that I could do that and now I see that I did that I made it”

3:14

And it’s just a wonderful thing

3:19

I think they’ll find it’s a very friendly, accepting atmosphere which is something that we strive for

3:21

It’s definitely a do-able program

3:26

It is a lot of a work and it is something that you have to be dedicated to doing

3:30

But after completing these two years of Grad School

3:42

I am very happy with everything that I have learned and also everything that I am able now to incorporate into my classroom and into my teaching

3:46

The areas that we can get yours masters in Special Education are

3:53

EBD, Emotion Behavior Disorders, Learning Disabilities, Early Childhood Special Education, and Developmental Delays

4:00

We also have recently developed and are now offering an Autism Certificate

4:02

When meeting with students

4:07

I sit down with them and if they have a particular area where they have expertise in

4:09

And they want to do something else

4:15

We can define and look at their program and make it a program that is going to be usable for them

4:19

And being a small institution, we all work together in Education Department to do that

4:24

One of the biggest moments in my education as a graduate student

4:29

Is probably working on my thesis and having to research

4:34

And then take that information that I learned and put it into the classroom with my students

4:39

I looked at the comprehension and engagement of students with these literature circles and without

4:46

So I looked at their comprehension before using literature circles and then I measured it afterwards

4:51

And it did show that the students all increased in comprehension how much they remembered from a book

4:55

So it was something that I wasn’t standing up the front teaching

5:03

It was them in charge and they were involved with what they were learning.
