VILLAGE ENHANCEMENT GROUP 23-11-2015

The village enhancement group is continually planning to enhance different areas around the community. They are open to ideas and suggestions from people in relation to any areas they would like to see improved or enhanced in any way. The group promise all suggestions will be discussed and feedback given to the relevant people. Presently the group is reviewing the projects it was involved in last year and looking forward to completing same.

Reidsx:Thegroup are quite happy with the present appearance of this area but aware further work is needed. It is necessary to allow the ground to settle and observe where further drainage may be needed next year. It is planned to set some shrubs along the insidehedge inearly spring andPadraic Horkanhas already advised us in this area. It has to be agreed if it is necessary to put an outside edging in this area and enhance the central flat area further.

We would like to take thisopportunityto acknowledge the people in this area who have cut the grass and maintained this area during the summer months. It demonstrates commitment and pride people take in their surrounding area in order to improve the environment foreveryone. Thegroup envisage that other areas will take a lead from this area and maintain each area following their enhancement as any public funding by way of work carried out will only be given once in each area.

AughagowerX:Thisappearance of this area has been admired by many people. The problem encountered earlier with‘Mare’s tail’ weed has been curtailed successfully withpersistent spraying byEoin. The laurel hedging has settled in. Again further enhancement along the main road on both sides is needed next year. Unfortunately due to the large volume of traffic at any time work in this area is proving difficulty for safety reasons. The traffic cone displaced recently needs to be fixed.

SCHOOLBUS RouteRevised atAughagowerJunction: The VEG members, Schoolchildrenand Parents especially are very happy with the new arrangement by CIE in the interest of safety, for school collection in the morning. Following safety concerns expressed to the group last year by several parents the group organised a meeting with all the relevant bodies. A meeting took place at the busy junction with the following people:

Ann Sweeney ( Area EngineerCastlebar) CIE Bus Inspectors Seamus and Denis, Mayo Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons,GardaSafety officer SeanCunnane, VEG membersEoinandBreege, Parent Representatives Lorraine L, Elaine G, Catherine H ,Michael G,SephineM ,T.F.Gibbonsand MichaelWalshe. Bus Driver Marty O’Grady had been consulted prior to the meeting and was delighted the safety concerns were being addressed. Proposals were discussed with all present and CIE agreed to explore same. Following review and several discussions during the summer it was agreed to revise the collection arrangement on a trial basis.

The school bus now travels up theAughagowerroad only in the morning, turns atO’Brien’shouse and collects the schoolchildren on its way back to the main road with the main stop at a lay-bybeforethe main junction. This prevents children having to cross the main road with the constant traffic. In theevening thebus stops safely along the left side. The group are very grateful to all the people involved who worked together to find a solution to this serious safety concern.
