“Life in the Crater”

The charming township of Akaroa sits at the edge of a pleasing harbour inside the eroded crater of a gigantic, extinct volcano. Akaroa is located an hour and a half drive southeast of Christchurch on Banks Peninsula, the South Island’s most impressive volcanic feature.

We are inviting you to submit photos that best capture ‘Life in the Crater’ as you see it.

The photographic competition is open to all amateur and professional photographers with great prizes to be won.

Entry Format

  • Entries must be digital images taken in the Akaroa & the Bays area. You may crop images before submission.
  • Digital images must be otherwise un-manipulated and submitted as high resolution (min300dpi) JPG images on a USB or CD tothe Akaroa i-SITE-Akaroa Adventure Centre, 74a Rue Lavaud,Akaroa or submitted by email to

  • You must be the sole owner of the copyright for all the pictures entered.

Terms & Conditions of Entry
The competition is run by Akaroa District Promotions Inc. By submitting an entry in the competition, entrants agree to the following terms and conditions.

  1. There are two classes - junior (up to 16 years and including) and senior
  2. All entries must have been shot in Akaroa or the surrounding bays
  3. All entries must come under the theme ‘Life in the Crater’ as you see it!
  4. Entries must be digital and are to be submitted by emailed jpegs to r on a CD or USB dropped off at the Akaroa i-SITE- Akaroa Adventure Centre
  5. Entries are to be received no later than 5pm on28 February 2018
  6. The entrant must be the sole owner and author of copyright and all other intellectual property in the material submitted to the judges. Each entrant agrees to indemnify ADP from and against all claims, demands, expenses and damages that ADP may face or incur as a result of any breach of this condition
  7. Entries must not have been manipulated in any way other than by cropping and by colour and exposure adjustments considered standard by the judges. Excessive use of filters is discouraged
  8. Photographs entered must not (at the time of judging the competition) have been the winner, second or third place getter, highly commended or similar in any other photography competition, whether in a particular category or an overall award
  9. Entrants retain copyright in their submitted entries but agree that ADP is licensed, without any payment obligation, to (a) include any entry in an exhibition or exhibitions of competition entries; (b) publish any entry in ADP’s newsletter to members; (c) include any entry in ADP’s website, Instagram & Facebook page; (d) publish any entry in any publication or poster for the purpose of promoting & marketing purposes and (e) inclusion in archival records maintained by ADP, (d) be used for commercial purposes but only by ADP, not other commercial businesses.
  10. The judges will be appointed by ADP. The judges’ decisions will be final and not subject to appeal or correspondence. Results will be announced in March 2018.
