Tentative Schedule for English 21, Spring 2013 English 021, Section 0219
Assignments are next to the dates they are due.
Always have Scantrons and be prepared for pop quizzes on the reading.
Week 1
2/11, T: Introduction
2/13, Th: Download, print, and bring to class the following documents: "Three Steps to Quoting," "Paragraph Outline Sheet," "Grandma Paragraph English 21 spring 2014 Mission."
You don't have to read these before class. Instead, start the MySkillsLab assignment, so you will be able to get it done on time.
Week 2
2/18, T:
- Register for MySkillsLab
- Do the "Path Builder" test and the Initial "Lexile Locator Test."
Instructions: on the left-hand side, click on upside-down arrow next to “Reading Skills.” Under “Reading Skills,” click on “Learning Path. “ At the top right, click on the “Path Builder” button, and complete the “Path Builder.” When you are done, on the left-hand side of your screen, click on upside-down arrow next to “Reading Level.” Click on “Next Level.” At the top right, click on the “Lexile Locator” button, and take the “Initial Lexile Locator Test.”
You have one week to get this done, so start it as soon as possible. Do not wait for the last minute. If you have any problems, please email me.
2/20, Th: MySkillsLab, Reading Skills: "Pre-Reading" and "Vocabulary."
The homework was in your MySkillsLab. On the left-hand side, under "Reading Skills," click on "Learning Path." In the center of the screen, click on "Study by Module." You will see the reading modules you have to do. Do "Pre-Reading" and "Vocabulary." If either or both of the modules are not there, that means you mastered it in your "Path Finder" test, and you do not have to do it. That gives you a good chance to get ahead. You can probably see it if you click onto "Mastered Modules."
Week 3
2/25, T:
- For Reading Level: On the left, under “Reading Skills,” Click on “Next Reading.” You will see a list of essays on the Right Center of your screen. The first one should be highlighted. If it is not, click on it. On the left center you will see the “Diagnostic” and “Exercise” for the essay. Do them both. After you are done, do the same thing for the next essay that appears on top. Do this for two essays.
- In Sentence Skills with Readings, read the essay “Talk'n’ White” (pp. 538-44) and answer the ten multiple choice reading comprehension questions the front of a Scantron. Write “Talk'n White” on the front where it says subject. Also, read “Do It Better!” (pp. 545-55). In the green space on the back of the Scantron, write “Do It Better!”
2/27, Th: 2 more Reading Level Exercises.
For Reading Level: On the left, under “Reading Skills,” Click on “Next Reading.” You will see a list of essays on the Right Center of your screen. The first one should be highlighted. If it is not, click on it. On the left center you will see the “Diagnostic” and “Exercise” for the essay. Do them both. After you are done, do the same thing for the next essay that appears on top. - Download and bring to class "Paragraph and Essay Structure for Eng 21." Please read the part on the structure of the paragraph.

(Don't worry if the essay list changes. The computer changes the list to accommodate your reading level. Always do the essay on the top of the list.)

As always, be prepared for a quiz on the reading.
3/20, In Sentence Skills with Readings, study Chapter 12, "Subject-Verb Agreement" (pp. 187-200)
Do Mastery Test 1 again. Hopefully, you will score better now that you know how go do it?
Also, do Mastery Tests 2-4
(I added tests 3 and 4 because we are not taking the quiz until next Tuesday. Also, you don’t have to write out the whole sentence. Only write the answers unless you are photocopying it from the book and answering it on those photocopies. For example, if you are asked to cross out prepositional phrases, write only the first and last world of the prepositional phrase and label it. Make sure you have 2 copies of the homework, a copy for me and a copy for yourself.)
In Sentence Skills with Readings, read the essay “The Most Hateful Words” (pp. 584-87) and answer the ten multiple choice reading comprehension questions the front of a Scantron. Write “The Most Hateful Words” on the front where it says subject. Also, read “My Daughter Smokes" (pp. 590-94). In the green space on the back of the Scantron, write “My Daughter Smokes”
(Also, make sure you save a copy of the answers for yourself when we go over it in class.)
Week 7
3/25, T: Subject-Verb and Subject-Verb Agreement Quiz
· In Sentence Skills with Readings, read chapter 11, "Irregular Verbs" (pp. 172-82)
· On pages 173-75, cover the past and past participle forms of the verb with a piece of paper. Make sure you can't see the writing underneath. For the past participle, put have in front of it. On a piece of paper, write down the present form of each verb and what you think the past and past participle forms are. When you are done, circle the ones you got wrong. Although you will hand this in to me, I am not grading you on how many you got right. This is so you know which verbs you need to study.
