Geometry Syllabus 2014

This course formalizes what students have learned about geometry in the middle grades, with a focus on reasoning and making mathematical arguments. Mathematical reasoning is introduced with a study of triangle congruency, including exposure to formal proofs, and geometric constructions. Students extend what they have learned to other essential triangle concepts, including similarity and right triangle trigonometry. Moving on to other shapes, students justify and derive various formulas for circumference, area, and volume, as well as cross-sections of solids and rotations of two- dimensional objects. Students then make important connections between geometry and algebra, including special triangles, slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, and parabolas in the coordinate plane, before delving into an in-depth investigation of the geometry of circles.

Class Procedures

ON TIME and ON TASK

a.  In order to be ON TIME the following must be done before the bell rings:

i.  Be in your seat ready to work when the bell rings.

ii. Tardies will be handled according to the student handbook.

b.  In order to be ON TASK

i.  A large portion of class time you will be asked to work in groups or by yourself and the expectation is that you do this without interrupting others or causing a scene.

ii. You are to be working on math unless otherwise directed by the teacher.

LESSONS:

a.  Lessons will be taught using the Flipped-Mastery approach. All materials can be found at www.flippedmath.com.

b.  Each lesson students will need to complete a packet that consists of taking notes, completing practice questions and completing an application.

c.  Video lessons can be watched anywhere. You may bring a thumb drive to copy the all the videos for the current unit onto it for you.

d.  Practice answers can be found online and should be checked by students.

e.  The teacher will check application answers.

f.  When you are done with the packet you should understand the entire section. If you do not, ask for help.

HOMEWORK: There is not traditional homework assigned. It is expected that you put in 20 to 30 minutes of work in at home towards working on practice problems, watching videos, taking notes, studying for a mastery check or unit test.

MASTERY CHECKS (quizzes):

g.  Upon completion of the packet, you will be given a Mastery Check, which is a short quiz over the current section.

h.  In order to move on to the next section you must pass the MC with at least an 80%.

i.  The Pacing Guide for this course can be found on the homework website and in class. If you have not passed the MC on time with the pacing guide you will be given a 0% grade for Class work, Homework and MC until you pass the MC. Class work and homework are incomplete (0%) until enough work has been done to pass the MC.

j.  If you take a MC and do not earn at least an 80%, you will have to do a corrective assignment and then retake the MC. Corrective assignments can be found online.

UNIT TESTS:

k.  At the end of every chapter you will need to complete a Chapter Review. There will be a video you can watch and you can check your review answers.

l.  You need to pass the Chapter Test with at least a 70% in order to move on to the next chapter.

m.  If you earn below a 70% you will need to do a corrective assignment and then take a Re-Test.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT:

n.  Keep it clean! Put all garbage in the trashcans. We need to take care of the room and a clean room is always better to learn in than a dirty room.

o.  Do not write on the desks, tables, walls, etc.

p.  At the beginning of the year you will be assigned a calculator number. This is the calculator that you may use and are responsible for during your class period. If something happens to the calculator while you were responsible, you will be held accountable monetarily.

q.  1-to-1 computers will play a vital role. At the beginning of the year you will be assigned a laptop number. This is the laptop that you may use and are responsible for during your class period. If something happens to the laptop while you were responsible, you will be held accountable monetarily. If you prefer to bring your own laptop or other electronic device that has the information loaded on it you may. (You are responsible for your personal items at all times.)

PASSES:

r.  Leaving the classroom is for EMERGENCY USE ONLY.

s.  Passes will not be issued the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of class.

GRADING POLICY:

t.  90% - 100% ------A

80% - 89% ------B

70% - 79% ------C

63% - 69% ------D

Under 63% ------F

u. Marking period grades are based on the following:

Class work : 10%

Homework : 20%

Mastery Checks (Quizzes) : 30%

Chapter Tests: 40%

v. Each semester there will be a cumulative exam.

Classroom Rules:

·  Be on time. If you are in the doorway when the bell rings, you are late.

·  Be prepared. (notebook, writing utensil, textbook, homework)

·  Be ready to work.

·  Be respectful. This includes classmates, teachers, and their property. Do not criticize anyone’s thoughts/ideas

·  Don’t assume you can groom in the classroom!

·  All school rules will be followed in the classroom – see student handbook

·  No one may leave the room within the first or last 10 minutes of the period.

These guidelines will be enforced and the consequences are:
