and to inspire life-long learners in a global society.

Belief Statements

Students will:

1.  follow a sequential course of study K-12.

2.  demonstrate developing proficiency in the target language within the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational).

3.  demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of cultural diversity.

4.  interact effectively in a different/non-native/alternative cultural setting.

5.  enrich/expand their knowledge of other disciplines.

6.  make connections between native and targeted language.

7.  enrich the world language classroom with their own cultural experiences.

8.  develop an awareness and appreciation of a global society through cultural comparison.

9.  become life-long learners by using the language for their personal enjoyment and enrichment.

The curriculum will:

1.  utilize the five “C’s” of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning (communication, culture, comparison, connection, and communities).

2.  provide assessment goals at each proficiency level aligned with national and state standards.

3.  provide a progression of communicative functions in the target language.

4.  recommend opportunities for authentic practice in communication.

5.  provide resources on a variety of cultural topics.

6.  promote divergent and critical thinking.

7.  identify cross-curricular activities.

8.  support academic achievement in other disciplines.

9.  reinforce skills in the students’ first language (reading comprehension, grammar/mechanics, and writing/speaking).

10.  promote awareness of our diverse multicultural society.

11.  recommend opportunities for interpersonal interaction using the target language with native speakers.

12.  prepare the students to be global citizens by broadening their understanding of the world.

Exit Standards

Standard 1: Communicate in Languages Other Than English

·  1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.

·  1.2 Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.

·  1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

Standard 2: Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures

·  2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied.

·  2.2 Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.

Standard 3: Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information

·  3.1 Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the world language.

·  3.2 Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the world language and its cultures.

Standard 4: Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture

·  4.1 Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.

·  4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the culture studied and their own.

Standard 5: Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home and Around the World

·  5.1 Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting.

·  5.2 Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
