Dear Colleague,
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION BLS AND ACLS
Thank you for your interest in Professional Emergency Care’s healthcare providers’ courses. At present we are offering AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, ACLS for Experienced Providers, Paediatric Advanced Life Support and International Trauma Life Support.
BLS for Healthcare Providers:
BLS for HCP is a 5-hour course aimed at pre-hospital and in-hospital healthcare workers, e.g. doctors, nurses, paramedics and allied personnel. It covers international guidelines and the latest recommendations on:
· CPR for adults, children and infants, including use of the BVM
· Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
· Management of the obstructed airway
On registration the candidate will receive a BLS for HCP manual. The candidate will be expected to achieve 85% for a written entry test. On successful completion of the course, the candidate will be issued with a BLS for Healthcare Providers card and a CPD certificate for 15 points, which is a pre-requisite for the AHA Advanced Life Support courses.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support:
The ACLS is a 2-day, hands-on learning experience, which focuses on management of cardiac arrest and various peri-arrest conditions.
Course Outline:
· Advanced airway management, including invasive and non-invasive devices and techniques.
· The major ACLS emergency conditions, including VT, VF, PEA, asystole, the tachycardias and bradycardias, and acute ischemic heart disease.
· Electrical therapy, including defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing.
· Invasive therapeutic and monitoring techniques.
· Special resuscitation situations, including stroke management and ethical considerations.
Entry Requirement:
· Current registration as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic.
· Valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider Certificate or Valid Paediatric Advanced life Support Certificate.
· Successful completion of the pre-course self-assessment module available on the website.
On successful completion, candidates will be:
· Issued with an American Heart Association ACLS Provider Card.
· Accredited by the HPCSA of SA of 34 Continuing Professional Development points (including 4 points for medical ethics).
· Credited points towards selected College of Medicine examinations
(e.g. Diploma in Primary Emergency Care).
The ACLS Provider Manual and Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care are supplied prior to ACLS participation. We recommend that you allow 1-2 month’s study time to prepare for the course. A multiple-choice question entry test will be written on the first day, with a required pass mark of 84%.
