BTEC First Diploma in Engineering

Unit 18: Engineering Marking Out

Credits: 5

Academic Year: 2011-12

After each assignment your work will be assessed within 2 weeks and returned to you for improvements

Task 1a (provides evidence for P1)
Complete the worksheets indicating the selected method for measuring and marking out each of the three work pieces chosen for this project.
List the appropriate measuring and marking out equipment required for each of the methods.
Task 1b(provides evidence for P1)
Using the information you have collected from Task 1a, demonstrate that you can select suitable measuring and marking out methods and equipment for three different applications
Task 2a (provides evidence for P2)
  • Complete the worksheets describing the appropriate measuring and marking out equipment for each of the three work pieces from Assignment 1.
You will:
  • name the components being marked out
  • name the equipment to be used
  • describe what the equipment is used for
  • give instructions on how to use the equipment
  • Annotate a final photograph of your work with labels to show what marking out applications you applied.
Task 2b (provides evidence for M1)
  • During your work, when marking out each of the three components, you may come across ‘defective’ equipment. What should you do with it?
Using the report sheet provided, you will produce a report for at least three pieces of faulty equipment shown to you stating:
  • the correct name of the piece of faulty equipment
  • the defect/fault (what is the problem)
  • the implications of the fault if it was continued to be used
the appropriate remedial/corrective action to make the equipment non-defective/safe.
Task 3a (i, ii, iii) (provides evidence for P3)
You are required to prepare a ‘work production plan’ for each of the three work pieces (drill drift body, drill gauge and tool tray).
The work plan must show a ‘progressive’ plan for the preparation and marking out of the materials from the time you get the ‘stock’ materials. Don’t forget that the material is liable to have a protective greasy/oily film and possibly burrs. The plan must include the following:
  • name the components being marked out
  • stage number for each process
  • the process being carried out
  • name the tools and equipment to be used
  • health and safety issues for the equipment and the materials
  • quality check – what tolerances and accuracy level will you be working to?
Time check
Task 3b (provides evidence for P4)
You will be observed working to your prepared work plan (prepared in task 3a (i, ii, iii)) when marking out each of the three components. It is important that you demonstrate that you understand how to carry out the correct procedures when marking out the work pieces
Task 4a (provides evidence for P5)
  • Leaving the work area in a safe condition; cleaning of equipment; disposal of waste; storage of measuring and marking out equipment is an important part of an engineer’s job.
  • You must give ‘SIX’ examples of where the above practice has taken place in your workshop and explain the implications of NOT doing it correctly. Use headings for each of the examples and bullet points for your examples of ‘Good Practice’. (Continue on separate sheet)
Task 4b (provides evidence for P5)
  • Whilst undergoing practical activity, you must be able to demonstrate safe working practice and good housekeeping. You will be observed during your practical sessions to ensure that this takes place during your routine and during all practical activity.

Task 3b (provides evidence for P4)
  • You will be observed working to your prepared work plan (prepared in task 3a (i, ii, iii)) when marking out each of the three components. It is important that you demonstrate that you understand how to carry out the correct procedures when marking out the work pieces and be able to carry out appropriate quality checks and reduce risks of personal injury. In doing this, you will be showing you have followed your proposed work plan.
Task 3c (provides evidence for M2)
You will be observed during task 3b to ensure that you carry out appropriate checks to ensure that each of the three work pieces you have marked out meet the requirements of the drawings provided to you and that you have followed the instructions given to you by the technician. Your work will be checked against the drawings by the technician to check you have fulfilled the brief.
Task 3d (provides evidence for D1)
  • For each of the three work pieces covered in the previous tasks, you must ‘JUSTIFY’ your CHOICE of measuring and marking out equipment.
  • Justify WHY you decided to mark out your first ’DATUM LINE’, the EQUIPMENT chosen (its use) and the TECHNIQUES used.
  • CRITICALLY EVALUATE your decisions giving good reasons and SUBSTANTIATE these (why you chose them), say WHAT you did, and HOW you did it.
