Scholarship Essay

Completing 15 hours of cultural service during the academic year is a significant partofreceivingthe International Student Scholarship. Scholarship recipients are expected to share their country and culture with members of the WWU and Bellingham community in activities that are academically and/or culturally beneficial. The goal is to provide people in the WWU and Bellingham community with a better understanding of scholarship recipients’ home country and culture and challenge people to engage in new activities and consider new perspectives. Please see the Cultural Service Requirement page for examples of qualified cultural service activities.

On a separate sheet of paper, and using no more than 500 words, please answer the following two questions:

  1. Give one example of a time when you worked to further cross-cultural understanding in your community; this could be a personal, classroom, club, or community interaction. What did you learn from that experience?
  1. As a scholarship recipient, what kind of cultural service would you be interested in doing? You can refer to the Cultural Service Requirement page for examples or give your own ideas/examples.

Scholarship recipients will be required to meet with the International Student Advisor in International Student & Scholar Services before Fall quarter to discuss a plan for completing the 15 hours of cultural service.
