POSITION: Program Instructor

The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate daily operations of the STARBASE program: to provide instruction in a program where the paramount qualification requirement is a combination of practical knowledge of the methods, and techniques of instruction and practical knowledge of the subject matter being taught, especially in science, technology, engineering, and math. This position reports to the Deputy Director and Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Program Instructor is required to have a variety of education, skills, aptitudes, knowledge, and experiences:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education combined with at least 5 years of experience as an educator
  • Employee must have a teaching certificate
  • Experience in creating and implementing training workshops
  • Experience in science, technology, enginnering, and math
  • A talent for working with children and the ability to create an effective learning environment
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, problem-solving, conflict-resolving and record-keeping abilities
  • Ability to recognize and evaluate effective teaching practices and classroom management skills
  • Ability and willingness to devote time as needed for quality communication and effective relationships with military personnel, school principals and teachers, students, parents, and volunteers
  • Commitment to work actively toward the continuous improvement of education at STARBASE
  • Must have CPR Certification

DUTIES:

A. Management of STARBASE Program

Assignments typically involve instructing courses such as elementary/secondary level science, technology, engineering and math; however, only approvedDoD curriculum may be taught during 18.5 hours of the 25 hours schedule. Source materials may be numerous or may need modification to be suitable for a particular student group. The curriculum is not typically found in regular school settings.

Assist upper management with technical and administrative work as well as guidelines, policies, and procedures for the STARBASE program.

Review work, assuring that all requirements for an effective program are met.

Make suggestions for opportunities provided by universities, professional education associations, local school systems and other outside organizations.

Assist the Director with any training workshops which might take place at site.

B.Program Operations

Responsible for overall operation of daily instruction, schedules, and activities.

Responsible for overall maintenance of approved curriculum.

Actively participates keeping updated with new approved lesson plans.

Assist with developing schedules and maintain computer systems.

Makes recommendations for equipment and supply purchases.

Develops and maintains a Resource Center with a checkout process for visitors, educators, and parents.

  1. Manages the Program

Establish and/or implement laws, policies, regulations, and procedures that promote effective classroom environments.

Manage fiscal resources responsibly, efficiently and effectively.

Use available technology effectively to manage operations.

Monitor and evaluate program operations and use feedback appropriately to enhance effectiveness. Maintain all records of students, teachers, class attendance, attitude changes, and pre / posttest scores if deemed necessary.

Maintain a safe, secure, clean and aesthetically pleasing classroom.

Maintain a positive program environment where cooperation and good student discipline is the norm. Use shared decision making effectively in the management of the program.

Manage time and administrative tasks to maximize attainment of the program goals.

Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion and exposure to inclement weather.

D. Direct Program Improvement

Encourage use and development of more technology within the program when it can better serve the students.

Grow professionally by engaging in professional development activities and making such activities available to others provided by the director.

Facilitate program-based research and use these and other research findings to plan program improvement initiatives.

Foster a genuine continuous involvement in promoting the progress of all students toward attaining high standards.

Communicate and cooperate with STARBASE staff -- in the sharing of best practices and lessons that fit the DoDI core and approved lesson plans.

Develop a one-week summer STARBASEprogram for children of personnel at Selfridge ANGB’s.
