Creating our Futures Together~Learning with Hands, Hearts and Minds

Dear Families:

Another exciting and busy school year is quickly drawing to a close. May was a particularly busy month with visits from Scientists, trips to the Old Britannia School House, spelling bee competitions, preparing for EQAO, Kindergarten concerts and an amazing Sharing Assembly followed by the Volunteer Tea.

In addition, we welcomed back Ms. Yeung who joined our learning team to replace Mrs. Chaar who went on an early maternity leave. Ms. Yeung is very familiar with the Trelawny community. We are very fortunate to have her with us!

As the 2012-2013 academic year draws to a close the staff would like to wish all our families a safe and healthy summer break. We send best wishes to the new graduates as they journey to a new school and hope that they will continue to learn and thrive. The staff would also like to say thank-you to all our families for all their support and encouragement over the year.

As educators we understand the importance of working with and for the families in our community. We appreciate working with you to provide the best possible learning community for our students. We look forward to continuing our learning together in the next academic year

It is said that Together Everyone Achieves More is certainly true at Trelawny!

C. Parr

Principal

THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!

This is the time to especially thank some key teams/staff members that contribute significantly to Trelawny. These teams ensure that we are able to maintain a safe and nurturing environment for all the students and families in our learning community

OFFICE STAFF

We thank, Mrs. Minicuci and Mrs Odd for all they do to help keep the school running smoothly.

They are the smiling faces you see when you first enter our school, and they certainly help to promote a welcoming environment for students, parents and staff, that reflects our school’s commitment to service.

CUSTODIAL STAFF

We thank Dobrilla Zubac and Sam Chiu and their team for their continued excellent work in keeping Trelawny a safe and clean place to work and learn.

EDUCATORS

The teachers and teaching assistants at Trelawny are an amazingly dedicated group of educators. They go above and beyond to ensure all students are supported and given the best opportunities to learn and succeed. Because of their commitment, students have had many fantastic learning experiences this year.

We appreciate all that you do for our learning community.

LUNCHROOM SUPERVISORS

Thank you to this dedicated team. We count on these women to provide a safe and nurturing environment throughout the lunch hour. There are here through good weather and windy, rainy, snowy miserable weather. They provide humour, caring and carefully manage students from Kindergarten to grade 5. Thank-you for keeping our children safe!

Please NOTE: We are still in need of more lunchroom supervisors for next year. If you or someone you know would be interested, please have them phone Ms. Parr at the school.

LADY BUG FOUNDATION

Trelawny will be having a Toonie Tuesday on June 11th in support of the Ladybug Foundation. The Ladybug Foundation was founded by Hannah Taylor when she was only 8 years old. Through Hannah’s efforts, well over 2 million dollars has been raised directly and indirectly for projects across Canada providing shelter, food and safety for homeless people. Through the inspiration of the grade 2 students our students are being reminded that reaching out to other’s to pay forward our own good fortune is important to being a responsible, empathetic citizen. Please support our student’s outreach by contributing to the Ladybug Foundation Toonie drive on June 11th. For more information visit

www.ladybugfoundation.ca

REPORT CARDS

A summary of Term 2 progress and achievement will go home with students on June 25th. If your family is leaving for vacation prior to that date, please provide your child’s teacher with a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and we will mail your child’s report card. Otherwise, we will be glad to hold the report card until the fall.

MEDICAL

Medication presently in the school office will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Please feel free to come to the office to pick up your child's medication, epipen or inhaler if your child will not be in attendance on the last day of school. If you are anticipating the continued (or new) need to keep medication here at the school, please also pick up an "Administration of Prescribed Medication" form from the office. This form needs to be completed and signed by your doctor annually in order that medication may be stored and administered to your child in the fall.

CLASS BUILDING 2014-2013

Organizing classes within a school is a very significant task. Many factors are carefully taken into consideration before the process begins. Teachers and administrators meet as groups to discuss class groupings and to build tentative classes. We do our best to use the information available to create classes that are balanced in terms of students' academic, social, and learning-style needs, in an effort to promote success for all students. Specific requests for specific teachers cannot not necessarily be accommodated as it would be impossible to honour every request for all parents, nor would this be in the best interests of your son/daughter.

REGISTRATION

The school office will re-open Monday, August 26th from 8:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M..

If you know of anyone in your neighbourhood who has a school-age child, please encourage them to come and register as soon as possible so we can place their child in a class.

LIBRARY NEWS

Students have been very busy reading their last books of the year from the library. All books are due back by Friday, June 14th. Overdue and lost book notices will be sent home if your child has a book that is still out. Please take an extra look at home for any library books that may have been misplaced – looking under beds and couches is a good idea!!!

I hope that all students and their families have an enjoyable summer. Please remember to support your child by setting aside a regular time for your child to read. The Mississauga Public Library is a great place for your child to visit and to borrow books from throughout the summer.

FOREST OF READING WINNING TITLES

The winning Forest of Reading titles were announced in May. Trelawny’s favourite Blue Spruce books this year were: Kate and Pippin”, “Don’t Laugh at Giraffe” and “JoJo and the Giant”. TIMBERTOT STORYTIME

Our last Timbertot Storytime will be held on Wednesday, June 26th between 9 and 10 a.m. This program is for future 2 and 3 year old Trelawny students and is a great way for your child to become familiar with our school and Library.

TUMBLEBOOKS WEBSITE

Don’t forget that the Trelawny community has access to Tumblebooks from home throughout the year. This is another great way for children to access books in the summer. There are several fiction storybooks on this site with accompanying quizzes and learning games; read along novels; books in French and Spanish, non-fiction books and National Geographic videos that are compatible with iPads.
