Lesson # 1

Sculpture

Grade: 5-6 (2-3 year)

Materials: none

Purpose: This exercise develops the team spirit, teaches a student to work in a group. It has a communicative goal too, as pupils learn to express their ideas with the help of the vocabulary they already know.

The Hockey Pockey song is also useful for training the simple prepositions like in,out, around.

Goals: learn and practice verbs and phrases(see attached page #1) through movement activity.

Directions:

At the beginning of the lesson teacher will evaluate students learning by having them show verbs and phrases previously taught. And the teacher will write verbs and phrases on the board for visual remembering.

Then the teacher will model activity. He/she will ask one of students to come up to the board, then the teacher will present a pose and ask a pupil to copy it with a help of directions the teacher tells him.

After that, the teacher asks a volunteer (#1) to leave the class for several minutes. Another volunteer (#2) stays in the class and is asked to present a sculpture-whatever pose he/she wants to present. After the pupil does that, the teacher covers the eyes of the first volunteer and takes him/her into the room. The Sculpture (person #1) must give the volunteer#2 commands to become the same Sculpture using verbs and phrases pupils have learned. The teacher asks several other students in the class to tell them if the Sculpture#2 looks the same as the Sculpture #1; and if not, students help using the same commands. When the similarity is obvious, both students take their seats the teacher takes the cover off the second student and asks for two more volunteers.

The exercise can be repeated as many times as the teacher wishes according to the time available.

Teacher may also ask students to sing the Hockey Pockey song together to make sure that everyone participates the activity. If pupils already know the song, the teacher can just start singing the first lines and the students will join him/her. If the song is new for kids, the teacher can give everyone a copy of words or attach them on the board and read the words before starting to sing. The teacher should be sure that every student understands each word. To check, the teacher can ask pupils act out what they hear line by line. If there are problems, the teacher should show the action himself/herself.
