Retain definitions remaining after this Section has been edited.

  1. MDF: Medium-density fiberboard.

First three paragraphs below are derived from AWI's "Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards."

  1. Exposed Portions of Cabinets: Surfaces visible when doors and drawers are closed, including bottoms of cabinets more than 48 inches (1220 mm) above floor, and surfaces visible in open cabinets.
  2. Semiexposed Portions of Cabinets: Surfaces behind opaque doors, such as interiors of cabinets, shelves, dividers, interiors and sides of drawers, and interior faces of doors. Tops of cases 78 inches (1980 mm) or more above floor are defined as semiexposed.
  3. Concealed Portions of Cabinets: Surfaces not usually visible after installation, including sleepers, web frames, dust panels, and ends and backs that are placed directly against walls or other cabinets.

Paragraph below is based on definition in HPVAHP-1.

  1. Hardwood Plywood: A panel product composed of layers or plies of veneer, or of veneers in combination with lumber core, hardboard core, MDF core, or particleboard core, joined with adhesive, and faced both front and back with hardwood veneers.

1.4  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.
  2. LEED Submittals:

Retain paragraph below if recycled content is required for LEED-NC or LEED-CI CreditsMR4.1 and MR4.2.

  1. Product Data for Credit MR4.1[and MR4.2]: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content.

Include statement indicating distance to Project, cost for each regional material, and fraction by weight that is considered regional.

Retain first subparagraph below and "Forest Certification" Paragraph in "Quality Assurance" Article if wood used to produce casework is required to be certified for LEED-NC or LEED-CI CreditMR7, which requires that a minimum of 50 percent of wood-based materials be certified. Revise below if certified wood is required but cabinet manufacturer is not required to be certified for chain of custody; if so, only the value of certified wood products rather than the value of cabinets can be used to meet the 50 percent requirement.

  1. Certificates for CreditMR7: Chain-of-custody certificates certifying that wood used to produce cabinets[and countertops] complies with forest certification requirements. Include evidence that manufacturer is certified for chain of custody by an FSC-accredited certification body.

  2. Section of countertop showing top, front edge, and backsplash construction.

Usually delete three subparagraphs below; retain if full-size Samples are required. Add or delete sample units to suit Project. Samples below may add cost to Project and may not be necessary if manufacturers are restricted to a list of those known to be acceptable.

  1. One full-size finished base cabinet complete with hardware, doors, and drawers, but without countertop.
  2. One full-size finished wall cabinet complete with hardware, doors, and adjustable shelves.
  3. Maintain full-size Samples at Project site during construction in an undisturbed condition as a standard for judging the completed Work. Unless otherwise indicated, approved sample units may become part of the completed Work if in undisturbed condition at time of Substantial Completion. Notify Architect of their exact locations.

Coordinate first paragraph below with qualification requirements in Division01 Section "Quality Requirements"and as supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.

  1. Qualification Data: For qualified Installer.
  2. Warranty: Sample of special warranty.

1.5  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Manufacturer Qualifications:
  2. Member in good standing of International Surfaces Fabrication Association (ISFA).
  3. Provider of fabricator and installer training.

Retain first paragraph below only if considered necessary.

  1. Installer Qualifications: Manufacturer's authorized representative who is trained and approved for installation of units required for this Project.
  2. Source Limitations: Obtain manufactured wood casework from single source from single manufacturer.

Retain first paragraph below if wood used to produce casework is required to be certified for LEED-NC or LEED-CI CreditMR7, which requires that a minimum of 50 percent of wood-based materials be certified.

  1. Forest Certification: Fabricate cabinets[and countertops] with wood and wood-based products produced from wood obtained from forests certified by an FSC-accredited certification body to comply with FSCSTD-01-001, "FSC Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship."

Retain one of first two paragraphs below if manufactured wood casework is required to comply with either standard referenced. Verify applicability of selected standard for Project's geographic location. Review standard selected and coordinate its requirements with options selected. Certification programs of both organizations are available to member and nonmember firms, but do increase cost in either case. Note that AWI's requirements for modular casework do not have grades.

  1. Quality Standard: Unless otherwise indicated, comply with requirements for modular cabinets in AWI's "Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards."
  2. Provide AWI Quality Certification Program [labels] [certificate] indicating that manufactured wood casework complies with requirements.
  3. Quality Standard: Unless otherwise indicated, comply with WI's "Manual of Millwork" for [Premium] [Custom] [Economy] grade.

If retaining first paragraph below, retain one of three relative humidity ranges or insert another based on local climatological data. First applies to Ontario, Quebec, and most of U.S. Second applies to damp coastal areas of southern U.S. and the Maritime Provinces. Third applies to dry southwestern U.S. and to Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. See map and discussion about relative humidity and moisture content in AWI's quality standards.
