Art 3
…features advanced techniques in two and three-dimensional media with pastel, charcoal, acrylic and mixed media. Students will compile a binder of major Art movements throughout history and create multi-media projects based on each section. In addition to drawing and painting, we will explore sculpture, architecture, printmaking and fiber techniques. Advanced students are required to participate in Art Show competitions and class critiques. They will receive a calendar of upcoming events periodically to plan their project schedules.
Studio Policy
Art is both academic and vocational. Because it is a studio class, students are expected to behave as professional, working artists each day. In addition to following school policies, I expect students to: work quietly all period, care for tools, supplies and materials, and clean up their own areas thoroughly. Work ethic and personal responsibility are as important as mastering content. PLEASE NOTE: Nothing is allowed on the desk surface except for art materials during class. Space is provided to store belongings safely in the classroom. These are not permitted:
Food, drink, candy or electronic devices
Unprofessional language, including profanity, obscenity or bullying
Images considered inappropriate by community standards. Art work will adhere to school appropriate content and may be censored at the discretion of the instructor.
Inappropriate attire. Dress code must be followed as described in the handbook.
Grading
Grades are weighted by category, with projects having the largest percentage as they take the majority of class time. Projects will be assessed according to criteria that are given in the instructions and they must be worked on in class.Unfinished work will not be graded. Students must meet project deadlines for shows and critiques.
Homework is very important at this level; major drawing concepts will be covered in weekly homework assignments which will not be accepted late except for excused absences.

Supply list for Art 3Supplies due on ______
Bring this checklist and all of your supplies by the due date for a quiz grade of 100 points. Each item on the list is worth points – you must have all 8 for full credit. Each day late will deduct 10 points from your grade. All students must have their own supplies to continue in class. All other materials will be supplied by the instructor.
Please bring:
- Sketchbook that is spiral bound, not glued, and has at least 80 sheets of white paper (not newsprint). Size: either 9” x 12” or 11” x 14”, no larger. Write your name on the front of your sketchbook with permanent marker please. 20 points
- Two stretched canvases size 11 x 14 or 16 x 20. Write your name on the back. 20 points*
- Set of graphite drawing pencils with charcoal. 15 points
- A selection of 3-5 small, bristle brushes. 10 points
- Set of colored pencils, see below. 10 points**
- 1” 3-ring binder with clear plastic cover pocket. 10 points
- Package of 25 clear plastic sheet protectors. 10 points
- White vinyl eraser. 5 points
- Extra credit: bring in a roll of paper towels for 10 extra points – optional
Graphite drawing pencils come in sets with a variety of density. They are graded from 10H to 10B with an HB pencil in the middle. Read the package carefully – you need an assortment of 6 or more pencils, some H and some B. Many stores offer sets with pencils, erasers, sharpener and blending stick all included. These are a better deal than buying each item separately.
The sketchbook will serve as a notebook for the class. You will use it nearly every day and must have it with you. Due to the amount of use it gets, the book must be spiral bound or it will fall apart quickly. There are storage bins in the classroom for materials that will not fit a book larger than 11” x 14”. You may take it home to complete homework assignments but you must remember to bring it back daily.
We will be entering pieces in the Amherst Art Show on September 10th. More info is coming soon!
