PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hi Everyone – Happy Spring.
The Village (along with other Municipalities) has been very lucky with this past Winters Snow Plowing Budget. For Deerfield, the savings amounted to just over $14,000. This savings will be applied to the Village’s undesignated fund, which is like a “rainy day” fund.
I would like to thank out-going Village Board Member Diane Wilkinson for her 6 years of service to the Village of Deerfield as a Trustee and to Heather Smith for her 4 years of service as a Village Trustee. The knowledge that these two members have contributed to the Village of Deerfield will be hard to replace. I would also like to thank Trustee Greg Frutiger for running for another two year term. Greg was sworn in on April 12, 2012.
As Village President, I would also like to welcome and thank Dave Wilkinson who ran this spring as a write in candidate, and Roger Fritz and Jerry McMullen who came forward and showed interested in serving on the Board of Trustees. All three new members have been recently sworn in.
On behalf of the Deerfield Fire Commission, I also would like to thank Bill Peters for his 25 years of service as the Secretary/Treasurer. Bill’s expertise and great sense of humor will be greatly missed. The Commission would like to welcome Doreen Treuden who has taken over Bill’s responsibilities.
The Village has recently taken bids on some much needed Street Repair Projects. The streets that will be under construction this summer are: Greenwood Street, Legreid Street, and parts of N. Washington and Liberty Streets.
Congratulations to Savannah Parkway on again being chosen for the 2012 Parade of Homes.
Village Cleanup: The Village Board recently updated the Village Ordinance dealing with “junk cleanup”. The Board felt that this has been a much needed change. The changed ordinance gives the Building Inspector in conjunction with our Police Officers the authority to issue citations to any home owner that appears to be an “eye sore” in the community. Please be sure to keep your properties in order.
Deerfield is very lucky to have Rock Disposal as our current garbage collector – and make available a list of items that they take. In addition – Rock Disposal is offering a “Clean Sweep” day on Saturday, September 15 where all residents are able to drop off items that are not on the list for “regular pick-up” (more information will be made available as time draws near). This would be a great time to dispose of some unwanted TV’s, Computers, Printers, etc. without any additional cost. If you have any questions about the new Rock Disposal service, see the Village website at www.deerfieldwi.com, contact Village Hall at 764-5404, or call Rock Disposal directly at 888-589-7625.
Deerfield has been chosen as one of the 10 locations in Dane County to have a MedDrop box for any potentially dangerous expired, unused or unwanted medicine. Funding comes from a grant provided by Dane County. The MedDrop off box will be located in the Deerfield Police Department and hours will be posted monthly on the Village’s website.
The Village Board is looking for those that may be interested in serving on some committees that require a “Village Resident”. If you think you would be interested, please contact the Village Hall for more information.
Finally, with summer coming, it will soon be time for the Deerfield Firemen’s Festival. This year it will be held on June 8, 9, and 10.
Mary Chadwick-Kiefer, Village President
PUBLIC WORKS REMINDERS
Village residents are reminded of the Village’s Weeds and Grasses Ordinance. All weeds and tall grass greater than eight inches in height are declared to be a noxious weed, pursuant to Wis. Stat. §66.0407(1)(b). Failure to keep weeds and grasses mowed may result in a citation or other corrective action by the Village.
Residents are also reminded to not mow grass into the streets. Grass and other debris building up in the storm sewer can cause backups and unnecessary flooding. Please leave grass clippings on your lawn or collect and dispose of them at the Transfer site located at 733 London Road.
PAY YOUR UTILITY BILLS ELECTRONICALLY
The Village of Deerfield Utility can now take payments electronically! On the same date each month, payments can be taken directly from your bank account via electronic transfer. No more writing checks, mailing payments or running to Village Hall. This simple way to pay your bill can save you time and hassle. In order to sign up for the electronic payment method, just obtain an enrollment form at Village Hall or on the Village website: www.deerfieldwi.com. If you have any questions about utility electronic payment, feel free to call the Village Hall at 764-5404.
DEERFIELD POLICE
DEERFIELD BIKE RODEO
On Saturday, May19, 2012 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM the Deerfield Police Department, along with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office will host the9th annual Bike Rodeo. The bike rodeo will be held at the Deerfield Elementary School. A bike rodeo is designed to be a fun, educational and hands-on way for children and parents to learn about bike safety. A bike rodeo is a great resource to introduce young bike riders and their parents to necessary skills to operate a bike safely.
This year’s bike rodeo participants will receive free bike helmets donated by Habush, Habush and Rottier. They will alsobe eligible to win other prizesonce they have completed the bike rodeo course. There will be new bikes raffled off at the event. Come and join the fun on May19, 2012!
If you have any questions, please contact Deputy Tony Reynolds at (608) 423-8076.
DEERFIELD LIBRARY
A Summer of Happenings at the Library
This spring Deerfield Public Library has been a busy place. We’ve had adult and family programming including a worm race and chair yoga, lots of visits from different classes and ages and our on-going book sale had quite a few additions since we weeded all of our adult VHS tapes, which are now for sale. We intend to keep this large inventory around through the Firemen’s Festival in June but then will clean house, so browse through our selection and make your purchases now.
Now we are looking ahead to summer and we have a few neat activities planned for the community. First, we are bringing a couponing program to the library Saturday, June 9th from 10-12. We hope you can join us. Then we spring ahead to registration for both the Summer Library Program and the Adult Summer Reading Program. The theme this year is centered around dreams. Watch for more information about both of these. Sign-up is easy! Registration day for both programs will begin on June 11th with lots of activities for the kids when they stop in that Monday afternoon. We will have a great line-up of performers, activities and special programs so stay tuned as summer approaches.
The Sheepshead group continues to meet and play on Tuesday afternoons from 1-4pm. A ladies crafting get together has also gotten organized and plan to meet on Thursday afternoons from 1-3pm once a month. Please watch for future dates. Storytime is held every Wednesday morning from 10-10:30am with a short break on May 30th and June 6th but will resume for summer on June 13th. There are many ways to follow the library and our events calendar by checking on our webpage: deerfieldpubliclibrary.org or going to our Facebook page. We also post events in The Independent, set out fliers at the library check-out desk or by emailing the director at and signing up for our e-newsletter.
