Fast Food Project

The fast food establishment I visited was Subway. I chose to complete my project on this establishment, because I am a vegetarian and it is hard for me to find places that have vegetarian options I enjoy. I am also lactose intolerant, so it’s hard to find food that fit both of those standards. Subway first opened in August 28, 1965. There are 440 subways that are known in the state of NJ. In 2012, Subway was calculated to have 25,549 in the US. I eat pretty fast food pretty frequently, especially Chinese food. People eat at fast food places because they’re placed in convenient areas, it costs less, it tastes good, and a lot of them have a drive though so it’s time saving.

The subway in my hometown has a nutritional menu online rather than in the establishment. I asked the worker if I could have the nutritional menu, and she said it was online. A typical meal at subway for me would be the mini veggie delight sub, with water, and Creamy Wild and Brown Rice (8 oz) soup.

Mini Veggie Delight Sub:

Total Calories - 150

Grams of protein - 6

Total grams of fat - 1.5

Total grams of saturated fat - 0.0

Creamy Wild and Brown Rice (8 oz) soup:

TOTAL:

Grams of protein - 13

Total grams of fat - 12.5

Total grams of saturated fat - 6.0

In the menu there were some items that had trans fats: 6" Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt, 6" Meatball Marinara, 6" Spicy Italian, 6" Turkey Italiano Melt (with Provolone), 6" Big Philly Cheesesteak, Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt (includes Ranch dressing), Meatball Marinara, and Spicy Italian. The percentage of my estimated daily calories by this meal is about 37% The most unhealthy item on this menu would be the 6" Turkey Italiano Melt (with Provolone). It has 24 saturated fats, and 9 trans fats. The sodium content is 1480. That’s more than 1/2 your fails recommendation. The healthiest item on this list would be the Veggie Delite salad. This is only 50 calories. It has 0 saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. It also has 80mg of sodium, which is great because you’re supped to have less than 2300mg of sodium daily.

Subway does provide healthy options, it’s really just a matter of fact if you’re willing to eat them or not. They are really healthy because these healthy options are low on cholesterol, trans fats, sodium, and saturated fats. I learned that It’s pretty easy to eat healthy at fast food places, IF you ask for the nutritional menu. You have to make yourself more aware of what’s healthy and what just LOOKS healthy.
