Dear Cathedral Parents,
We are into a full week of Lent by this time and I wish to explain our Lenten offerings for our students and for you.
- Father Munshower has encouraged our students to come to daily Mass one extra time per week. As an adult, this is a good practice for us, also. If you are able to join us for Mass, please feel free to do so in our Chapel at 7:00 a.m. Tuesdays – Fridays. Specific dates are shown on the next page under Mass Information.
- We will also be having a Reconciliation Service for all of our students on Tuesday, March 11th. This is not open to parents since the visiting priests are very busy hearing the confessions of our students.
- As a Catholic institution, no meat or meat products are served on Ash Wednesday or any Friday in Lent.
- Our students have been encouraged to go beyond the “giving up of something…” for Lent and have been asked to do something extra for another in a way that the other person receives it, perhaps not been aware from whom the service came.
As models to teens, it is important that we each do something special for this time of coming closer to Jesus.

From the Desk of the Chaplain ~ Daily Mass is offered in the Chapel at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Fr. Munshower encourages members of the Cathedral Family to contact him to have a mass said in memory of a loved one. The $10 mass stipend would go to a fund to help financially marginalized students here at Cathedral High School – helping those within our midst who need our help! If you are not able to pay the $10, you may still submit an intention for our daily Mass. Please contact Fr. Munshower at 968-7362 for details and arrangements.

“What is Certamen?,” I hear you ask. Certamen is a Latin competition by teams. Six Latin students will take part in a Certamen competition at Elwood High School on January 23rd. We have 3 young men from Latin I entered in the Novice division and 3 Latin III students entered in the advanced division. It is like the Brain Game, with teams competing against teams. Subject matter is anything pertaining to the Classical world: Latin vocabulary and grammar, Roman and Greek history, art, architecture and mythology, biographical information, etc.
Congratulations to Connor Hofmeister (12) and Dave Page (12). Both of these wrestlers have been named as members of the First Team Academic All-State Wrestling. Host families sought for children of Northern Ireland: The Irish Children’s Fund is seeking host families to welcome children from Belfast, Northern Ireland into their homes for one month in the summer of 2008. This will be the twenty-sixth summer that the ICF has brought an equal number of Catholic and Protestant children to the Indianapolis area. During their visit, the children will participate in activities designed to foster the spirit of cooperation and friendship, bridging the divide between the two communities.
- Upon returning to Northern Ireland, the children have a follow-up program available to them through which they can continue to come together in ICF-sponsored activities and maintain the friendships formed in the United States.
- The ICF is proud to have played a part in the current stability that is being developed in Northern Ireland. Yet there is a continued need for cross-community work to help in healing the scars of the past while moving forward towards permanent peace.
- For additional information, call Kim at 823-7040 or visit to open your home and hearts this summer….and build a lifetime of memories and friendships

Below are some reminders in which you can help assist our front office personnel when you come in contact with them:
- When your child has an appointment, please call either the night before or early in the morning. The rule is that you call ahead so that we can have a pass in your student’s hand and he/she is in the office waiting for you when you arrive.
- If the appointment is with a doctor or dentist, always ask for a doctor’s note for school before you leave the office.
- It does not help when a parent calls the school as he/she is driving up the hill.
- Merely telling your student does not help, either, but you could send a note or call early in the morning.
- The school needs to be the authority to release a sick child. If your child calls you to come and get them, please call the front office to see if anyone there is aware that your child is ill. We do not wish to keep ill students at school and will call you if they are ill and need to go home.
- When you text message your child, know that the message will not be received until after school. Otherwise, you are encouraging him/her to break the “no cell phone during the school day” rule.
- Please do sign in any time you are in the building. We are responsible for 1,283 students and must know who is in the building at all times.
- Juniors and Seniors taking a college day must have filled out the proper paperwork and have it signed by all their teachers before it is an official “college day.” We ask for this paperwork so that all of your teachers know you will be missing that day and so you have your assignments and can come back to school prepared when you return. Merely calling in and saying, “Joe was on a college visit,” or sending a similar note, will not count as a college visit. The student must do the necessary paperwork before he/she may use this privilege.
Thank you very much for your cooperation in these matters!

You might want to give a card or a note to our Cafeteria staff who provide a good lunch for your children each day. They are often “unsung heroes,” and can feel taken for granted much of the time. A card or a note would be wonderful. The Director of the Cafeteria is Marty Dugan.

“RETURN TO LITTLE ROCK” - Fifty years later –on February 21stat 7:00 p.m. at The Orchard School, 615 West 64th Street
Minnijean Brown Trickey - One of the historic “Little Rock Nine”
Fifty years ago, Minnijean Brown Trickey was one of the students who first desegregated all-white Little Rock Central High School. Her bravery and tenacity places her in the eye of a national storm over racial segregation. Come for an eyewitness account of the events that forever changed the course of education in America.
- As a 16-year old high school student in 1957, Minnijean Brown Trickey and eight other black students courageously faced threatening, angry crowds blocking their entrance and their right to go to high school.
- The world watched as these young students-the Little Rock Nine, as they came to be known-were escorted by National Guard troops, under Presidential order, through the doors of Little Rock Central and into the consciousness of America.
Free event, but tickets are required. For tickets, please contact Ms. Ramona Powell, Director of Diversity/Assistant Director for Enrollment at 317-542-1481 ext.367.
